Mechcommander: Just a classic game..
« on: February 26, 2009, 07:01:19 AM »
So I got mechcommander working, just copy the entire CD contents to a folder and then play the game, that easy, no need for installation. I'm running Vista 64bit as well.

On subject, I forgot how amazing this game really is. I remember playing countless hours when it came out so many years ago. I was just playing some of the very first few missions, one I would like to account was OP1: Mission 3.

The mission is to Escort Rven 'Mech to safety. I took a Firestarter-W, two Commando 1-A & 1-W, and a Uller-W. The mission is so fun to be honest.. I used a large air strike on two commando's near the middle of the map, salvaged one and the other went critical. I cut through the forest right there and ran into two commando-J's that jump across and ambush you. I quickly let the Uller to medium distance to open up with his PPC. While the others went close range and tore the first commando to bits.

So the first one down, the Uller takes a shot with its PPC at the second Commando, center torso goes molten and explodes! One shot kill! Was awesome to watch, reminds me so much of the board games!

I regrouped and headed toward the unknown Raven's location. After linking up we made our way around the Island back toward the extraction zone. You run into two Firestarters on the way there which guard a heap of salvage containers, dispatching them quickly I soon moved southward. I captured the little outpost with three laser cannons.

Knowing what came next I selected Hunter in the Commando to do a daring scout. I knew the Madcat/Timberwolf crosses the bridge when a mech approaches. So I sent him to recon, drawing the Clanner out. I had him make a run toward the outpost to allow the madcat to stop, well the AI isn't smart and instead of running around the hill north, he turned around and headed south. I quickly corrected this but too late... ER PPC's and LRM's streaked toward hunter... with two PPC's in the back he ejected safely.

I used the zoom button to locate the cockpit of the madcat. Using a large airstrike, the counter ticked down... BOOOOM! Cockpit cored, battlemech in perfect condition! What a success, Hunter's sacrifice of his commando was worth it! Oh how I recall doing that in the past with the madcat going critical and swearing up and down! I also used to try and hit the fuel tanks right when the madcat came across the bridge, but often it would be destroyed...

I find this old game amazing... it isn't eye candy, but too be honest its unique in its own way. I'm enjoying it yet again, even after so many years from its release.

I'm playing through this again right now myself.

I think it's much better than MC2. It's much more challenging and really rewards smart play...MC2 was a bit too easy and was really just a case of selecting all your units and pointing them at a target.

I agree without a doubt. I had so much high expectations for mechcommander 2, then it released and I was really let down. There was so much detail that was going into mc2 that never was released. There were different weapons, equipment for starters, things like: LRM20-5's, Gyro's etc.. There is a way to get them working, with allot of work. I remember getting all the stuff with the help of some guys files, Magic, or something like that.

I enjoy mechcommander, it would be nice to see a mod team of this caliber take on such a task.

I am most definitely in the same mind as you guys.  MC1 was far superior to MC2 IMO, although I did still enjoy playing MC2, it was in truth a disappointment.  I LOVED MC1.  Couldn't begin to tell you how many hours I wasted on that one, with MS Gaming Zone.  It's still a dream that someday someone might make another one, or something similar.

MC2's big rework/patch helped a bit, but the game was fundamentally flawed, IMO.  It just couldn't reach the level of fun that we had with MC.  A lot of folks went back to MC and kept playing that.  Even though it was 2d, it was still so very awesome.  The playability was the thing.  It required planning, strategy, teamwork, and really hit the nail on the head, sort of bringing the whole table-top experience to fast-paced strategy PC gaming.  Gawd I wish M$ would get their thumbs out of their butts and make another BT game.  The license is just being wasted.  It's part of the reason I hate IP law.  It does nothing to promote innovation, only stifle it. :(  Everybody loses.

I'd really love to see someone manage a mod of Total War for Battletech.  That would be insane!

You do not have to burn the .ISO image to a CD. Just use Daemon tools, load the .ISO and it acts like a CD/DVD drive. Hope that helps!

There are several mods for MC2 that made it last a lot longer on the hard-drive, don't have the links on this machine, but you guys should google it, there were new campaigns (including the entire Mercenary's Star book, and the CW-JF Refusal War and the Clan invasion.....all good :) )  They were a LOT harder, sometimes almost impossible.... all sorts of new things added and many many more 'mechs (the refusal war campaign had Executioners, Warhawks, Turkina's, for example).

I even re-installed it on my old machine a few years back, just to get my BTech fix again after playing through MC and Desperate Measures again!

I dled MC today, because this topic made me want to play it :>
But scrolling is way too fast, is there any way to slow it down?
Game runs at normal speed, but lightly tapping a direction key instantly takes to the edge of the map :/

I noticed that when the game is in windowed mode, just hit the maximize and it will go full screen. It won't have that issue anymore! Let me know if that works for ya!!

This is true, but that is the game! It isn't so bad once you get used to it.

I just started replaying this game too.  When I first played it long ago I knew little about the universe in general, but playing now it's like I know all the tricks and secrets to playing Battletech, and the battle is practically won already  :D

Currently in operation 3, but I must brag about this configuration I made for the Centurion W.  I upgraded both LRM's to Clan tech, then replaced the Autocannon with a Gauss Rifle and added an Intermediate Radar Scanner.  Eventually I salvaged a Clan Gauss Rifle, swapped it in, and added a Clan Pulse Laser, all while keeping the original PPC onboard.  Put Hunter or Lynx in as the pilot, and you've got one kickass fighting machine that can own the opposition even if supported by only light mechs.  Ammo is a problem, but if you have a refit truck or access to a repair bay, watch out Clanners!

The centurion is just a solid battlemech, no arguing that. That config you speak of reminds me of Kai Allard Liao's Yen Lou Wang refitted by Victor. Thing was refitted after he declined having a Dire Wolf from the Wolf Dragoons. It had MASC as-well, which helped him save Victors life when the Falcons ambushed the prince, Kai took out a few Timber Wolf's and then smashed into one going over a cliff into the ocean... the rest is a great story too!

Last mission I did, I had put Lynx in a Cougar W, I do not take refit trucks, I tend to do it old school. Well a few luck shots from a few strikers and an ammmo explosion later killed him. So there went one of my top mechwarriors, I still have Hunter and a few others who are catching up. I had put him in the Cougar so some of the others could get more kills with the larger battlemechs.

I almost lost Countess earlier in a mission, she turned her back when an AC20 slammed into the back of her battlemech, almost died but luckily she survived, I've kept her out of action while recovering.

I do not restart missions, even if they go south or not as planned. But strategies are amazing on this game, it is so fun getting back into. I enjoy a battlemech engaging, and having two of mine get behind him and take him out quick. Anyone else find 'Siren' voice annoying? I don't use her just for that reason! haha

I have salvaged a good bit of clan tech so far:
Timber Wolf *madcat*
Hunchback IIC
Cougar A
Cougar J
Cougar W's
Uller A
Uller W's

I need to find my Mechcommander Gold cd... I downloaded it but it asks for your CD and obviously I don't have one lol. Any ideas?
