The only mission I found difficult in Mech Commander was the one where you have to chase about 20+ mechs down that are all trying to run off the map in different directions.

It's actually fairly easy to keep them together.  They scatter the moment you open fire on them, but will stay in formation no matter how many mines or artillery strikes hit them  ;D

What I do is buy a minelayer and deploy all my forces in the north (no scouting parties).  Rush to the forest road and battle the two Cougars there.  Then send your minelayer to the bottom of the small town and begin mining it on the bottom side of the road (4-5 squares wide) all the way up to the forest, then mine the whole forest road.  Deploy your mechs so that your heavies/damage dishers clog the road at the north entrance and some missile boats (preferably lighter mechs) on the hill to the northwest of the road (using the trees as a shield from direct fire).  When the mechs come the mines will slow the line down, forcing them to bunch up.  Time their arrival to the gas tank in the town, then use a small artillery strike to blow it up when a whole bunch of mechs are right by it.  This should take out/heavily damage a third of the forces.  Then wait for the mechs to enter the forest and open fire with your mechs.  At this point they won't scatter and will bunch up in the forest.  Keep firing and use up all of your artillery strikes and enjoy your victory.

I just got lazy for that one and used the reveal map and nuke cheats.
