So close and yet so far (ModDB Mod Of The Year Results are In)

We've been counting the days, we've been anxiously waiting for the results to be published and finally, they are here: ModDB has announced the top 5 mods in the Best Upcoming Mod for 2008 category. The results, while very positive, were not quite what we had expected.

The top 5 mods in the Upcoming Mod for 2009 category are the following:

5. Third Age (Medieval 2: Total War)
4. Mideast Crisis 2 (C&C Tiberium Wars)
3. Renegade X (Unreal Tournament 3)
2. Neotokyo (Half-Life 2)
1. Dead Before Dawn (Left 4 Dead)

Are you missing your favorite Mechwarrior-related mod in this as well? So did we. However, the reason for MECHWARRIOR: LIVING LEGENDS not being among the top five is simple and it is not the fact that we did not perform extremely well: as one of last year's top5 mods, we were not eligible for the top 5 in this category again.

Honorable mentions
We would like recognize the mods Black Mesa (Half-Life 2) and Mechwarrior Living Legends (Crysis) who both polled extremely strongly and would have made the top 5. However, because each has already made this list in past years, they are ineligible from making the top 5 again in this category.

Nevertheless, we would like to thank all of you for the amazing display of confidence and your support in this vote, which would again have made MECHWARRIOR: LIVING LEGENDS one of the 5 most anticipated mods for 2009. We appreciate it and are looking forward to give you something that's good enough to go for #1 spot next year again - in the "Released Mods" category.

I can see the understanding in that, it's nice to see you guys get recognized in the footnote though.

Good job guys.  The best that could be hoped for I guess.  Did you not know about that rule before this?

All considering I don't think you have asked for much more. Well, even though you didn't win, MWLL is obviously still one of if not the most anticipated mods for 2009.

The rule says you can't win twice. We didn't actually consider us "winners" after taking #4 last year.

Still a very good result.
It simply means MWLL can or better, hopefully will win the next year's no#1 top released mod of 2009.  :)

Was there any mention anywhere in the rules that a top 5 rating in the preceding year disqualified us?  That seems like something that should have been mentioned early on, rather than creating a false list at the last minute.  Not to sound like a sore loser, but changing the rules or introducing unpublished rules after the contest is over is an example of very bad contest management.  Then again, maybe I'm just bitter because I was once won a tech contest in high school by a huge margin, but was disqualified because the judge apparently flunked reading comprehension re: the rules.

No offense, but MOTY this year is bullshit.  It would make sense if everything else made sense.

Project Reality, a mod that DID WIN FIRST PLACE last year for MOTY, won #1 Editor's Choice MOTY this year again...

..yet MWLL is DQ'ed from being in the top 5 because we managed to place in the top 5 last year in players choice.  What...?

I can understand if we won 1st place last year, like Black Mesa did.  In which case, it makes perfect sense.  But... we didn't  We didn't even make 2nd or 3rd place last year.   And yet we're DQ'd... when mods like Project Reality that did win MOTY can still win for catagories like Editors Choice.

Let's not even get into how a simple map pack for L4D that is hardly a mod at all (it doesn't add or change anything to the actual gameplay, or even add anything new visually other than new maps), was even eligible to win and won 1st place.  wtf?

Some guy making a few good looking maps for L4D wins all these 3D developing software tools over real mod teams.  This doesn't make any sense to me.

*shrug*

At least Jurassic Park wasn't mentioned. That's still a win.

I agree with Korjax completely. A map? Seriously? ModDB really fapped up this year. And with all that BS waiting we had to do through the freaking editors choice.

ModDB = fail.
MW:LL = PURE 100% FKING WIN.

I was expecting us to be higher, but the way ModDB did it this year was whack. I also agree with KorJax. But you win some, you lose some. I just want to let you devs know that you did an incredible, incredible job. My gratitude.

Not that I have time to do it but...... someone make up a petition and I'm sure every member here will gladly "sign" it so we can ship it off to MOTY.

I haven't paid much attention to it (voted and forgot about it to be honest) but from what I've read here something certainly smells like bullshit. As such, make sure that MOTY knows how much work went into it, the bullshit rules bending, and just how many of us are pissed off. If nothing elese theres the whole "theres no such thing as bad publicity" thing to consider if we can raise a big stink about it.

If they have forums there post a link for us to vent there..... if they have an email address post it..... anything to make sure MWLL and you devs get the recognition you deserve.

You guys are easily number 1 and I'll explain why. Some of those mods are just changed some player models, adding in a few new maps and guns and vehicles. Yay. Wow. Cool.

You guys did something that no other mod team has ever done: put Mechs into a game, walking around and shooting eachother. That deserves more credit than something else. Also, they should differentiate between mods and total conversions. What mods of those projects are, are mods. You guys are doing a total conversion. Big difference, one of those requires a hell of a lot more work.

Congratulations, you guys made number 1 again.
