No offense, but MOTY this year is bullshit.  It would make sense if everything else made sense.

Project Reality, a mod that DID WIN FIRST PLACE last year for MOTY, won #1 Editor's Choice MOTY this year again...

..yet MWLL is DQ'ed from being in the top 5 because we managed to place in the top 5 last year in players choice.  What...?

I can understand if we won 1st place last year, like Black Mesa did.  In which case, it makes perfect sense.  But... we didn't  We didn't even make 2nd or 3rd place last year.   And yet we're DQ'd... when mods like Project Reality that did win MOTY can still win for catagories like Editors Choice.

Let's not even get into how a simple map pack for L4D that is hardly a mod at all (it doesn't add or change anything to the actual gameplay, or even add anything new visually other than new maps), was even eligible to win and won 1st place.  wtf?

Some guy making a few good looking maps for L4D wins all these 3D developing software tools over real mod teams.  This doesn't make any sense to me.

Naturally my thoughts.

If this so-called rule exists, and if we placed it in other real life events such as the Olympics, how many less athletes would be attending since they would be denied "1st prize" based on getting a bronze or silver the last competition? How many teams would be denied 1st prize if that rule were carried to the World Cup? My point is that this rule must have been implemented to prevent possible mods from reappearing, having improvements, and taking the communities by storm.

So why did MW:LL lose to a, and really trying to be objective here, "lesser" mod? One word: connections.

Don't be surprised if the developers of those high-ranking mods were in constant contact with the site owners, knew eatchother personally, or even WERE the site's owners! Because in the end, the admins are the ones with the webcode.

Playing devil's advocate here, I can see why they cut us off at the knees. It's not to hurt our publicity or a personal attack in the least, but this is a means to make sure the rich don't get richer. Let me explain.

If ModDB allowed other winners to be on top year after year, then no attention would go to any other aspiring mod that shows alot of promise. I might be the first to admit it, but we were noobs once and we jumped at the fact that we had 1,000 visits to our since in a month :D, but now look where we are.

I do have to point out that we DID get and honorable mention as ModDB knows we qualify for top 5 easy. And I do have to thank all of our loyal fans out there for helping us out with that. By no means is this a loss because I look at the traffic post ModDB contest and I see our hits in the millions. Even now I see new members joining daily.

So to all, I say rejoice in the fact that the project is becoming more popular day by day and come release, you will have even more targets to shoot ;).

I just LMAO'ed at your avatar Kam.

True, they did at least admit that you guys WOULD have gotten into the top 5.  I guess you do have a point that they are trying to 'spread the wealth' a bit.  That still damages their credibility though, even if they are trying to be fair and reasonable.  In this sense, ModDB chose to be fair instead of factual.  That means that they will not report results properly if they decide they aren't 'fair'.  Yes, it's mitigated by the 'honorable mention', so I believe they are trying, but I'll be taking what they provide with a grain of salt now.

Wait a minute.  On a different forum that I read they were praising that Project reality took two awards.

Quote
The votes have been counted and the results are finally in for Mod DB's prestigious "Mod of the Year 2008" competition! Out of 5,000 mods spanning across a variety of games and over 115,000 votes in total, Project Reality has officially been crowned Mod DB's Player Choice "Mod of the Year 2008" and also Editors Choice "Best Multiplayer Mod"!

After placing second for the past 2 years running, a historical first in the 7 years Mod DB has been holding the competition, Project Reality, who was the only Battlefield 2 mod to place in the top 10, finally notched past some very stiff competition to take home top place. We would like to extend our congratulations out to all of the top mod teams for their great finishes this year. The innovation and quality of your mods continues to inspire us all. To view the videos featuring all of the winners from each category or simply to see who finished where, head on over to Mod DB and check it out.

The Project Reality Mod Team is fully aware that our accomplishments are not entirely attributable to just hard-working, talented team members. We recognize that the mod has grown and prospered because of a great community of gamers, like you, who have given us continued loyal support and meaningful feedback since the very beginning. With that said, we would like to say thank-you to all of the community for playing and promoting our Mod, for experiencing the growing pains of "product in evolution" with patience, and for helping to get Project Reality into the forefront of the international modding community. Without the continued support from our global community, the entire Mod DB staff, Black Sand Studios, and from each developer, contributor and tester on the team, Project Reality would not have been able to evolve into the mod it is today.

The future looks bright for Project Reality, and we want to acknowledge your contribution in our journey to achieve our vision. We look forward to developing Project Reality into 2009 to bring you continued innovation, high quality and teamwork centric game play. Be sure to stay tuned in to the Project Reality website for updates and news on the Project Reality Mod.

Now I don't know where that was quoted from, but if MWLL was disqualified this year for placing 4th last year, how in the work did Project Reality take first after placing 2nd the TWO YEARS????

I'm missing something.

Yes, "users choice" and "editors choice".

Now I don't know where that was quoted from,

realitymod.com, the Project Reality website.

Just guessing: Project Reality has been a released mod, not a WIP mod. It's a Battlefield 2 mod and Battlefield 2 had been released in 2005.
Maybe this rule doesn't apply to or is less strictly enforced on released mods.

The actualy "Mod of the Year" this year can only be a released mod.  Theres a seperate category for unreleased mods.
Also, you are allowed to win in both editors and players choice.  You just can't win two years in a row in players choice.  Which imo is kind of retarded. THey should use the same rules for the entire contest not per category.  It jus confuses things.

What irks me is that their motto is "changing the game."  While a MAP PACK wins?  What?  There are so many other mods who have done better and changed so much more.  But layers choice is after all player votes . . . 99% popularity and PR
