Switching to Wars?

Think of Crysis and Crysis Wars as two different games. Wars offers lots of improvements in multiplayer which Crysis does not offer at all. Additionally we have AI for Singleplayer in Wars again, including Warhead assets. Also the engine is further improved and optimized than Crysis.

Crysis Wars trial is for free for everyone to play on LAN and the Warhead package (which includes Wars) can be purchased for a few euros, so why wouldn't you release your mod for a standalone addon that comes with so many improvements? Smile

Technically it is not possible right now to have shared multiplayer with Crysis and Wars, again both are different games - they've got only the name and theme in common. If it would have been possible, we would have done that for the release of Wars already Wink

If modders rather decide to mod for Crysis, well there is nothing we can prevent them from doing so. We still hope that, now that the Editor and the SDK are out, most of the modding community will move their projects over. Again we have put lots of improvements to both the game itself as well as to the editor for Wars and the tools such as exporters.

According to Alex Crysis and Wars multiplayer will be incompatible with each other. He says it shouldn't be much work to port your mod between them but people on each game won't be able to play on the same server. In addition he claims that Wars has a better overall support for multiplayer and modding.

What do you guys plan to do? Stay with Crysis only? Do both? Switch to Wars? I have a feeling doing both games would split your community in two. What are your thoughts?

This seems... optimistic.  Additionally, any position that allows Crytek to sell more (new) games is going to be the one they take.  This isn't a negative mark against them as their purpose as a company is to move product and make a profit, so I understand why they would take this position.

What are your thoughts?
Any deviation in the development process will only push back the release date.  A judgement call by the DEVs would need to be made as to whether the benefits of going to 'Wars outweigh the additional development and retooling time necessary to migrate existing code.

Well both the editor and SDK for Wars is coming out today. I'm pretty sure they've mentioned that they'll be releasing the beta for Crysis.  Maybe 1.0 will be for Wars? I'm sure once all the tools come out for Wars they'll be messing with em to see how much work it would take to transfer over.

~Edit: Well speak of teh devil. It just came out. Link

We've been tossing around the idea of releasing for both versions. Though certainly not at the same time.

so, let me see if i got this right:
Crysis Vanilla = Alpha,
Crysis Warhead = Beta,(improvements in performance)
Crysis Wars = Gold (further improvements in performance and multiplayer)
this about correct?

Wouldn't it make sense just to release for Wars since it has all the improvements? If you release for both that just means more work and I think the community would be very strange split between two games...

Warhead is single player anyways, and the new SDK and Editor is for Wars not Warhead.

Do you realize how many people bought Crysis just for our mod? I'm sure most would be pretty pissed if they found out we changed what game we were releasing for. It would be a waste of money buying Crysis.

Yes, but it's still not going to happen. We've been announcing a Crysis-based release for more than a year, so there will be an MWLL release on Crysis. We will not leave those people who bought Crysis only because of MWLL out alone in the dark now.

If you release for both that just means more work and I think the community would be very strange split between two games...

We've been discussing this internally already and basically agreed on a strategy which takes all of this into consideration. That strategy, however, is not to be published at this point.
So much for now: those who bought Crysis for MWLL will get a release and the future will see a Crysis Wars version of MWLL as well.

I've also bought crysis but would highly appreciate if there would be a wars version.
Wars is IMHO the better solution in terms of server hosting, since there's a dedicated
linux server package out there.

As one of the people who bought Crysis just because this was being released on it, I thank you.

I'm not saying one is better as the only one I have is Crysis, and the only reason I have it is because of the potential for this mod.  So once again thanks.

I would be interested in helping to port it to Crysis Wars when the SDK comes out, but I'd really need a new computer first. Will almost certainly have one by the point they release the SDK, though.

Ick. Splitting the community before the game is even released.

Why not just keep it on Crysis? Is the difference in Crysis Wars and Crysis multiplayer that extreme?
