Helicopters, hovercraft and sea vessels?
« on: March 25, 2009, 03:12:50 AM »
I know there are V-TOL's and Tanks and A-fighters...and of course mechs..but how about helicopters like ther peregrine ( i think that was what it was called) and the night shade? or hover craft like the hairraiser...actually i think i saw one or two models of the Hovercraft in the models somewhere..and last but not least sea vessels? any sort of patrol boats or destroyers? that sort of thing??

maybe not in the beta but perhaps an addition to the finished product.

Factions page

So far it looks like we got some helo aircraft, and some hovercrafts. Whether any of them will be in the first release, 1.0, or not at all...only the devs know.

Well, V-TOL's really take the place of any aircraft that can hover, so that really makes helis null. But hovercraft is a good idea as then they could be like tanks that could travel across water.

and last but not least sea vessels? any sort of patrol boats or destroyers? that sort of thing??
Well, as almost all mechs can travel in water, sea vessels are pretty useless, as they would also be more maneuverable.

I wouldn't say boats are totally useless, they could probably pack a solid punch from a far with Lasers or AC20's or 10's.. it could also be that the boats could go places where some smaller mechs couldn't if the sea level was deep enough...and the water channels in swamps or island maps small boats with the right gun could do hit and run tatics quite effectively, not to mention Anti-air. However i can see Hover craft having the same effect and even being able to go on land too, perhaps boats could be more heavily armored then hover craft which could give them a slight advantage. Just thoughts though.

I always pictured V-TOL's as hover jet type the ones that can hover like a helicopter but can climb up to speeds like a jet. but since it stands for Vertical take off and landing then i can see helicopters put into that catagory too.

well, mechs would not be all too useful in the middle of the ocean.  You have deep sea pressures that would ruinate you to all hell as you wander about effectively blind.  its easier to deal with the vaccum of space than the pressures at the very bottom of an ocean.  Especially since you'd be trudging around in slow motion on the floor.  A boat or sub would be vastly superior.
Wherever mechs are needed, I am there

I´m not so sure about that Masa. A helo harassing a 'Mech from above is a deadly bee. The helo is more mobile, faster and can keep behind the 'Mech, stripping it´s armor ;)

So can a VTOL, and VTOL's can go faster, can probably take more hits, and can carry more armaments.

Helicopter armed with LRM/Arrow IV(if copter big enough), and waiting some target to be Tagged to unleashed a volley of missile from anywhere.

Helicopter (who are part of the VTOL familly) are mobile support unit (fire support, recon), trading armor for more mobility.
They are easily shot down by AA since they are a lot slower than Aircraft, but they can get behind cover, pop over it, unleash its ordnances, then hide back. Not a frontline unit, that's official, but in the hands of a good player, they can be dangerous.

Helicopter (who are part of the VTOL familly)...

The VTOL is an off breed from Aeroplanes, that it was wanted to have a plane with the abilities of a Helo.

Your thinking real world. In Battletech lingo a helicopter is referred to as a VTOL.

If your making a helicopter you want it to have an extreme range weapon like an AC-2 (shocking I know) or a light gauss rifle. Short range weapons like massed SRMs are suicide. If you want to be different you can try side mounted LRM racks and fly around your enemies instead of having to fly toward them.

You also want your helicopter to be as fast as possible. Speed is life when you have almost no armor and a sizable hit to your rotors or other lift device will send you into the ground.

I can't think of a more worthless thing in BT than a helicopter.
That's something of a shocking statement. I've heard of people doing a crazy amount of damage to mechs with helicopters like the original Warrior in conjunction with other conventional forces.

just a statement of fact, for people who don't know what the acronym means...Vertical Take Off and Landing (VTOL).

Exactly Cujo, and it is stated in the wiki "VTOL" article that KitLightning linked to that helicopters are considered VTOL aircraft.

Except that AC20's and 10's don't go "a far". ;)
