Tree's and vegitation
« on: April 12, 2009, 04:03:33 PM »
Hiya, new to the board sorry if this has been touched before but archives never seem to be my friends for some strange reason..

Anywho, long, long.. Very.. Very long, had Battledroids long time fan of Battletech/Mechwarrior, except for that crap they tried to pass off as Mechwarrior game on the Xbox, I've liked everything that has had the Mechwarrior stamp proudly pasted on it!

Just saying that so no one can chew me out for saying I dunno what I'm talking about but here it is.. Why are the tree's so monstrously huge compared to the mechs? Like.. I know on -some- worlds tree's grow 20 some meters high etc in Battletech, so.. Is that the case here? Because even the grass seems to be about 5 meters tall? Or is this a limitation that can't be worked around with the Crysis engine or would just be far too much tweaking and twiddling around with to care aboot hehe.

Just curious, the graphics look insanely amazing for a modded game, like the mechs are true to their forms in virtually every way and gosh I sure to like seeing an Elemental in its glory, being able to hunt down and rip a mech up just like the good old days! And the Tanks in is amazing I've always missed being able to pilot tanks in Mechwarrior.. Little known MW2 Mod that was released just incase yer all "Pilot tank? CRAZY!"
There's too much good I want to say about this it'd be like giving the dev's silk toilet paper and offering to be their personal wiper, so I'll avoid lathering on my mass of compliments! Have a good one.

The trees are too small.
The trees are too tall.
The trees are too allright.
Tastes differ. So do Tree-Sizes, even on todays Earth.
Grass will be between 30cm and 3m to give some kind of cover to Battle-Armor i guess.

This question has been asked a lot. But don't worry, I've got the answer. Just now, the development team is working hard so all trees in the released version are just the right size!

vs.

Truth be told the scale in traditional mechwarrior games was always way off.  For something that's about 8m-15m tall at the most, everything else was always depicted as horribly small such as the tanks (which were barely large enough for a person the way it was portrayed) and the tree's (which were rather small for full grown trees).

Also don't use the old images as a frame of reference using the old tree models.  My signature pretty much shows the scale of the trees currently.

Hmmm, I get what you mean but planets of red woods are abit far fetched haha. But looking at your signature the scale seems really good, ah heck a lush vegetated world with lots of oxygen aint far fetched for Battletech at all!
And aboot the tanks I see what you mean when in some of them you see an infantry unit standing beside a tank lol, but for the most part comparatively the tanks were a great scale just the people often were a little.. Big. Not counting Elementals, those guys are freaky huge, 2 meters baby!

Darn that signature picture is awesome.

Look around, one of the last advent calendar pictures has a higher resolution version of that picture.
sadly, the picture itself tells me nothing about the size of the damn trees . . the ony building i can make out could be 3 or 30 stories tall, for all i know.
No Tank, no Elemental, no Mech, no Aerospace Fighter, no Unarmored human, no scale to say:"oh, about so and so many meters"
i would REALLY love a picture like this with something like that . .
so we could sticky it and have the discussion about foliage end once and for all, so we can concentrate on the fact that we will geto to steer fapping big robots with fapping huge weapons and duke it out with other such nerdtastic stuff ^^

*Gasp* Don't tell George Lucas that!!!  ;D

The scale of the trees seems about correct to me. I'm not talking about red woods but regular trees do grow over 30m if they're not, you know, turned into houses or paper. Ever seen a mast on an old ship? Goes all the way down to the bottom, is made from one tree. The poles holding up the buildings in Venice? Same thing, one tree, not even a whole tree. There's two pine trees in front of my grandpa's house in Toronto, I remember the top of the tree was even with the second floor windows, used to look down at them all the time. Damn things are over 10 meters now. Taller than the house. And they're still young, as far as trees go.

I think the reason you believe the trees are too big is that you've never gotten to see forest that hadn't been cut for lumbar and replanted, or maybe only seen trees that had gotten topped in a storm or something and had their growth stunted.

On the other hand, we may have gone overboard due to the lumber mills on clearcut and the heavy wind in frostbite, but no telling for sure.

You guys might have to work on another application that will allow people to customize their trees... lol.

They'll already have the Cryengine 2 SDK when they own Crysis, they're more than welcome to make MWLL Maps with trees scaled to their liking.
