Aerospace countermeasures?
« on: May 01, 2009, 06:04:11 AM »
Howdy,

I saw this mentioned a while back, and I was curious as to what was going on with countermeasures for aerospace vehicles currently. Just a few questions:

Is this a mechanic we can expect to see upon release?
Is there an idea for how much they'll need to be depended on for survivability?
What are the odds of being able to evade an LRM, considering whatever the flight speeds will be upon release?

Thanks,
Jazz

From everything I've read on the Forums we can only assume that the Aero's in MW:LL will act like Battletech ASF should.

Understand that just like with 'mechs, every unit can cause you damage on the battlefield, few things will knock you out of the sky in one salvo though. So if you flew low over a bunch of Harassers expect to take SRM Hits, you get LoS with an Awesome and your dodging PPC bolts.

ASF have thick armour, a lot less usually than 'mechs of equivalent tonnage, but still capable of soaking up at least one hit from most anything you can throw at it.  There's not much in the cannon for countermeasures IIRC, and LRMs are the least of an ASFs worries the faster ASF should easily run past the LRMs range or turning circle quite safely if we look at the TAG video to get an idea of LRMs speed.

Some vehicles are also designed to kill ASF and they tend to rely on clusters of LBX-AC2s and so on for fast firing rate and hits at extreme range.  As another poster pointed out, Lasers of all variety are your enemy!

On that note, how much do you suppose Aerospace will rely on speed and maneuverability versus armor?  Will it be possible for Aerospace to pull loops and aileron rolls as in a proper flight sim?

From some of the videos, it seemed that speed was the most useful countermeasure to any weapon.

Hop in an Asf´s way and punch him xD low flying and contour-attackflights might not be tolerated with jump-capable mechs at skilled hands ^^

and did you gyus just look at that intimidating Atlas screenie....fabulous!

And the nice panoramic views of Marshes xD   I wanna go theeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeere , hell yeah!

Course the best aerospace counter measure will be your teams aerospace fighters lol.

You try that when I'm coming straight down at you from 5,000' at 320km/hr with an LBX-20, 2 Large Pulse Lasers and 2 LRM-20's pointed right at your dome. The extra upward velocity from your jump-jets ought to give a nice kinetic boost to those incoming warheads ^_^

Yeah... I hate those 5000 foot low flying contour-attack flights, dont you, siege? :P

It's like a Brick wall equipped with jumpjets at that point, never a good thing to see in your crosshairs at close range while going top speed :P

Yeah, the idea here is after years of flight training, I do my best to avoid intersecting my aircraft with anything vaguely resembling a brick wall, much less ever fly a combat vehicle on a heading and trajectory that is not only predictable,  but desirable by and advantageous to my enemy. An aircraft's advantages are speed and freedom of movement, and even jump-jets aren't going to make a battlemech "3D" enough to save you.

Also, I myself never said anything about low-flying NOE flights, though you can be certain that when the terrain is to my advantage, I will be doing just that; but only when you least expect it :D

There should be some base defenses that will be good harassers for aerospace fighters. I shouldn't expect too many anti air specific vehicles or mechs though.

On Falcon wings we harry them.
With Falcon claws we smite our foes.
And with Falcon tenacity we win.

I wouldn't count on that.  Some of variants we have seen already could easily be anti-air mechs.

Not wanting to give the development crew another headache, but I wonder if any type of Constantly Computed Impact Point[b/] (CCIP) will be factored in?
I can’t promise that if you choose to fight, that there will ever be a victory, or a day that we can step down and say our work is finished. All that we may ever accomplish is to keep the darkness at bay, and hope that we don’t lose ourselves in the process. Maybe that is futile, maybe that is a losing battle. And maybe we are just delaying the inevitable.

But if by doing so I buy myself one more day…one more moment…here, with the people who matter…Then it has all been worth it.

Our lives are the sum total of thousand of choices. And the burden of that freedom is sometimes too much to bear. But you won’t have to do it alone anymore. We will find a better way.

Together.
