Mech controls/movement
« on: May 07, 2009, 03:55:15 AM »
Hey all.  I just found this site after doing a search for MW5 like I do about 1/year.  It's very compelling to say the least.  I have a few "dumb" questions though.  Will mech piloting be more like MW2/4 or MW3, or something totally different?  I think I read that it won't be anything like Mechassault.  YAY for that!  I always felt 2 and 4 felt similar, and MW3 was the odd one out.  I think the main reason was how the reticule and torso twist worked together iirc.  It's been quite some time since I played.  Also I get the impression that there won't be a 3rd person view option.  Is this true?  I understand how most "hardcore" people hated 3rd person due to "exploit" sniping.  I never really understood this so long as the rules were the same for all, but that's a different topic.  I personally liked 3rd person just so I could see my cool mech heh, but I could live with 1st person.  Anywho, I've typed enough and asked too many questions already.  If there is anyone from the old MW4 Vengeance league out there especially from Clan Dark Revenant or RAGE, send me a PM.

There is only a first person view, yes.  Seeing as the game is mulitplayer only (for now) this is done for both immersion purposes and for fairness.

And you won't be able to manually aim/point your reticle and arms around with your mouse like you could in MW3, so I suppose it's mostly similar to MW4's aiming/control method.

That's cool about 1st person.  I get it, but I still like seeing my mech.  That's great news about it being more like MW4 targeting.  I always liked it better than 3.  Thanks for the info.

Excuse my ignorance and lack of going to google and checking it out, but is Mech4 aiming like mech2 aiming? I've never played either 3 or 4. I remember in 2, when you moved the curser the mechs body moved in that direction. It's been more than a decade since I last played it, so I don't really remember much.  :'(

I liked the MW3 aiming but due to manpower/resource limitations my opinions is irrelevant.

to me it's a cross between mw3 and 4- the best of both worlds in my opinion. there is a 3rd person view but it is utterly useless for anything other than screenshots- i doubt anyone will want to use it once they see it's a disadvantage unlike other mech games- no seeing over hills/mountains and no more noobs looking around corners etc...........

Just FYI, MekTek's MP4 is supposed to have free-reticle aiming enabled, last I heard. The last posts I saw on their website indicate release after the upcoming AT1 beta release. That of course says nothing about *when*, other than the patented SOON4, lol. Hopefully this year.

Once again, FYI, everything MekTek does is reverse engineered on top of MW4 Mercs. They don't have the source, they don't have the SDK (tain't one). The game engine is 8 years old I think...this is their last release on that engine - that's why they are moving to AT1, I think. AT1 is built from scratch using a game engine of their choice...I haven't been following that build, so I don't know much about it.

FWI third person view will be disabled in the beta+full releases  :P

But you are right.  The way it's set up now is exactly like that old Madcat looking at the explosion picture from the Advent Calendar.  Good only for screenshots or seeing how things move so you know it looks right, unlike MW4 where it was basically a camera that floated above your head and gave you more "view".

And yeah, mechwarrior 3 definatly had it's charm to it, but to be honest I never really used it due to me using a joystick.

I am rather pleased, personally, that it will be limited to first-person - I'm too busy looking for the enemy too be spending time looking at my mech; I plan to spend a lot of time watching the neat graphics of the enemy in full retreat, though, and I like the immersion of the HUD and cockpit view.

Forcing a first person view places emphasis on the strengths and weaknesses of the first person cockpit viewable area/peripheral view.  I, for one, am happy to have this restriction enforced as it eliminates artificial "leveling" that a 3rd person option provides.

1st person = simulator, immersion
3rd person = MechAssault, please just kill me

This is implied based on analysis of some of the Advent Calendar screenshots released thus far.

The first screen shot isn't a vulture cockpit, the target is Spyro in a Vulture.

Judging by the weapons and equipment I would guess that it's a Masakari/Warhawk. Though, what a waste of Gauss Rifles on a mech with so many integral heat sinks.

I believe the 2nd cockpit is from a BloodAsp, but I've been wrong before.

As far as controls, you could make me do jumping jacks and squat thrusts to aim and I'd still play after what yall have showed us.

I really like MW3s controls, I actually use a joystick AND mouse. Stick is throttle (main X axis), steering (main Y axis), views (hat), and weapon/heat management on the buttons. Mouse does floating cursor, holding right click does torso twist, left button is current weapon group, wheel selects groups. I'd love to use the stick twist for torso twist, but it won't let me :(

But as I said above, jumping jacks and squat thrusts if I must. MW:LL is looking to be my next addiction.
Gun control means using both hands.

lol wow your control set up is funky, congrats for originality man! lol.

And I think you're right on the Blood Asp cockpit, couldn't be a Timber Wolf cause the frame bars are too close together and well, there are 2 weapons directly to the right and left and the Timber Wolf's weapon racks are VERY spread apart.

I've thought about that control scheme before, but alas I don't have a good joystick to work with.  =(

I'm in the same boat because I don't have a joystick, so I have to stick with the keyboard for movement as well as all the miscellaneous controls.
