Mech ramming/collision
« on: May 08, 2009, 09:41:40 PM »
So the tangent in the Aerospace Countermeasures thread got me thinking: How viable a tactic would ramming a mech be (as a 'last resort' option of course)? Is collision damage able to be turned on or off on each server?

Example situation: I'm out of ammo in a damaged shadow cat. A heavily damaged Atlas is strolling by. Could I full speed right into it and take it out?

Edit: Also, what happens when you eject from a mech moving at full speed? Is it locked in that speed, does it immediately shut down, or does it grind to a halt?

I can just imagine a shadowcat with a cow catcher mounted on the front.  lol

I'm pretty sure there will be collision damage, probably not enough to do much to anything. It would be cool if you could at least knock a lesser-tonned 'mech over.

I would think that you would have to stay with the mech, as once you have ejected, you sever the neurohelmet connection. The probabilty of a strike would go way down (imo) or you would run the risk of ejecting right into the other mech.
I can’t promise that if you choose to fight, that there will ever be a victory, or a day that we can step down and say our work is finished. All that we may ever accomplish is to keep the darkness at bay, and hope that we don’t lose ourselves in the process. Maybe that is futile, maybe that is a losing battle. And maybe we are just delaying the inevitable.

But if by doing so I buy myself one more day…one more moment…here, with the people who matter…Then it has all been worth it.

Yeah sorry bout that on the countermeasure thread, i think we all get a bit carried away  :-\

I think it would be cool to sumo over a lighter mech with an assault. It wouldn't really be unfair because of the speed differences. I dont exactly believe that a Scat could flat out kill an atlas be ramming, even heavily damaged one but if you could eject next to it and get your mech to go crit im sure it would do the job. Do mechs go boom when you eject or do they just shut down and remain till they are destroyed?

Shoot, I remember reading about boom vs shutdown somewhere in one of the other forum areas. For the sake of salvage, I am hoping for more "Mech fall down go thud" than "Big bada Boom"..

If you eject I am fairly certain that they will stay, as they did say you could steal enemy vehicles etc but not peoples on your own teams.

That would be my suspicion as well. As Fliyngtiger pointed out as soon as you ejected the neurohelmet connection would be cut, so at the very best any automatic balance systems tied to the gyros would kick in and try to stop the mech and prevent it from falling down. Failing that, it would probably just fall over if the mech were moving with any real speed.

Given the intended ability to be able to steal 'mechs, I believe any abandoned equipment will come to a normal stop, if not immediately, then fairly rapidly and be unlikely to do any real damage. Unless of course, you eject at the very last split second, in which case you're likely to be caught up in the resulting nuclear fireball anyway.

There's always the suicide tactic too.  Ram an enemy mech to cause a little damage than suicide your mech and hope the splash damage takes out your opponent.

HAHAHA!!! Personallly i think the ravens would (if their piolots had any worth) dodge to the side and swarm the atlas like a LOT of angery bees, but would still be funny  ;D

none of you know what DFA was do you? lol in mechwarrior2 mplayer and Kali.net  it was action were you would turn on your down camra and lined it up to the person cockpit and bounced off it the enemy was dead. this was highly hated among some clans because pepole were able to go into a 3v3  2 timberwolfs"madcats" and a stomcrow  vs 3 warhammer][-c's  and the stormcrow would bounce off heads then the timbers would finish off by landing once and poping them all while timbers might have been damaged the war hammers would be UN touched besides there cockpits were crushed hehe if you didint stay away form your target and he knew how to tap dance on your face you were doomed. this was because jumpjets were so flexable and were on all mechs that could hold the tonage and the more jumpets you had the faster you moved when you used them. but in this mod bewere of my shadowcat foot iam comeing to play kick the can! ;)

You bet there will be a collision/physics engine with this game... Halo collision, mechs bouncing into each other and getting launched 1000 feet in the air and SRM jumping with Elementals. It will be glorious!

Just kidding.  :D
