Cockpit
« on: May 13, 2009, 02:31:28 PM »
First, I just wanted to say: THANK YOU! I love what you're doing, and I've been waiting for something like this for years!

Onto my question: Since the primary focus is around mech's, and since they'll be in first-person, will they have damage? For example, if I got shot by a weapon right at my cockpit, would I see cracks in the windshield? Perhaps as the mech gets more damages, consoles light up and stop functioning, etc.

I didn't see anything about this on the forum, so I thought I'd ask.

Thanks again and keep it up!

Hey, welcome to the forums.

Visible damage as you suggested would be a nice feature, but is simply way beyond what we can achieve with our manpower in reasonable time.

I remember the cockpit class spiderwebbing whenever you got hit there in mechwarrior 3. It was a pretty awesome feature. I remember one time it was so bad that I couldn't see out of the glass very well in a lot of areas. Then I blew up and died. LOL.

It really helped with the immersion level, but I don't know if it can be done with the Crysis engine.

Yes it can and we discussed this on length. We even discussed the ability to snipe out the pilot straight out of the cockpit  with a high caliber weapon. The consensus on it though was that in the 31st century if you are driving a walking tank...would you really have shitty glass on the cockpit? Or would it be something akin to bullet proof glass or even some special see through material that wouldn't be easily shattered.

We had builds for quite some time where the pilot in the mech was not invulnerable to attacks and we found the sheer amount of times that the pilots were getting shot out of their mechs was simply too much and really stole from the experience.

It's too bad that you cannot afford that feature at this time. I think having some damage to obscure the view would really add some effect. However, if it cannot be done at this time, then it cannot be done at this time. I'd rather have great gameplay, over flashy effects. :P

Thanks for answering my question!

I completely agree with you on the immersion front wheras adding damage ontot he glass and cockpit adds to the experience. I am fairly certain you will see effects of particular weapons left over on your mech for a few seconds but nothing as complicated individual shards of glass or anything. Welcome to the forums by the way :)

Yeah, in one of the books, I recall reading that it the glass was "ferro-plast" or something. Some kind of mix with plastic and whatever they make the Ferro-Fibrous armor out of, I guess .

I always imagine (to justify large cockpits on mechs like a battlemaster) that its not any sort of glass, but the ferro-plast Firstorm is talking about.

I imagine its almost a durable as the rest of the mech, but more expensive and a bit thinner. Certainly enough to withstand a few lasers or a light autocannon.

Gauss rifles on the other hand...  ::)

I remember reading that the cockpits used ferro glass. They like using ferro (insert material) a lot.

Yeah they can't spider crak or anything like that, built really tough and can  withstand a lot of punishment, not always doin the trick but most the time! lol.

Was plasteel (presume plastic steel) not ferroglass, at least that's how it is in decision at thunder rift.  The clans might have different form of it.

Well, whatever material it's made out of, the play test are really promising.
