whats it gonna feel like?
« on: June 11, 2009, 12:06:02 AM »
Was playin some BF2142 last nite and started thinking about MW.. See, to me, BF is nice.. its ok, I kinda like the hover tank, you can get a feel for the thing and wreck some havoc...But its nothing like how veng or mercs felt.. Sry, wasnt hip to MW b4 that.. What i mean is that.. Given the right circumstances , A pilot could literally rip through enemy formations, and 'FEEL" the emersion.. You would not mistake a cougar for a scat, a thor for a nova etc etc... Each mech .. "felt" different, and outside of lag, could be "mastered" because a pilot knows the limits of each individual mech..
Till MWLL is released, ill just have to ask... What do you guys think who r testing? I know the game looks awesome, theres no doubt, but do the mechs have at least the "character" that they had in the M$ versions?

I think the feel of Mechwarrior has been made up of three good elements.

1. Sound effects are the most iconic part, really sets the mood for the whole thing.

2. Heat management, there is something character building about managing a vehicle that is constantly overheating on you.

3. Weight; different sized vehicles moved and handled so differently that you could invent a character for every mech, that includes top speed and how fast the head turns all the little things made a difference.

I just hope it's 100% Simulator. Like MW1, 2, and 3. MW4 got a little simplified for me. I dunno, I dont think it pulled off the "sim" aspect of the franchise as well as its predecessors.

No Mechassault for me thanks.

Mechwarrior should be a game that requires dedication to get into. Not just a "run & shoot" first person or third person shooter that coincedentally involves mechs.

I loved all the weird little things that would happen in MW1, for instance. You could get heat sinks blown apart, and then no matter what you did, your engine temperature would slowly rise until your mech died. Also, your gyros could get hit and you'd just be stuck there, still alive, still with operational weapons, but unable to move - I beat a mission like this, because the enemy was still right in front of me, haha. Also, in order for you to die, your mech actually had to be destroyed. If your legs were shot off, you'd be on the ground, but you could still go into the command screen and order your lancemates into different positions on the map to attack different targets, and you could still win. I also enjoyed how you could shoot the head off a mech, and its head would actually dissapear. Likewise with legs, and arms. The torsos would just get all black if they were destroyed I believe.

Considering when it was made, I think MW1 was the best MW game. It felt really true to the BT universe, and did a few things newer MW games didn't. But, of course, I have very high hopes for MW:LL, because the devs are trying to stay very faithful to the original BT rules, which should make it very 'simmy' :).

In Mw2-4 (nvr had 1 sadly) I mastered the Summoner, made a bunch of different configurations for it, and just played it to death.

I think MWLL might just be the truest battletech game ever, because its no longer just mechs duking it out!

Just so your hopes and dreams are not totally crushed when the release comes, I wouldn't expect (atleast for the first initial releases) for MWLL to be AS hard-core in the simulation department on the level of MW1.  Truthfully most players in a multiplayer game would find stuff like being stuck and unable to do anything with legs being blown off as annoying rather than fun (remember leg-kills in MW3?  Yeah those were cheap as hell, and those were actually nice enough to kill you so you could get on with your life :P).  It's also an issue of getting everything to work right too (there are plenty of features shown off like the time of day cycle on extremity, that are a bit hacky to get it to work right in of itself), which is where time is needed to really get any potential smaller features in like that.

MWLL probably won't be as "hardcore" as MW1, and several elements defiantly won't be 100% sim-based because of the mix-arms combat (if you'd rather have a good all around epic FPS experience you can choose a role such as battlearmor, if you want a more sim-based experience you can jump in a mech or aerospace fighter, etc).

That said, this sure as hell ain't no mech-assault :D

It's one of those situations where we wanna make it as fun as possible for new players trying it out and not forcing them to read a 50 page manual, but still have a good deal of depth and tons of options in the game with strong "sim" aspects to really touch on what made mechwarrior/battletech so good in the first place :)

If we were talking about starwars or gundam I'd see what you mean, but mechwarrior? ???

Yes. In my mind he's correct. There's something classic about the sound of those lasers and PPCs...they just dictate how you feel when you play the game. MW's sounds have always been way cool - especially since it's difficult to work on creating a sound for something that doesn't exist in the real world.

FWASH goes the PPC in MW3. And away your Targeting Reticle will fly.
Yes, PPC's have Recoil in MW3. AND I LIKE IT LIKE THAT! ^^
'any kind of discussion of randomness ALWAYS WILL EQUATE to being able to critically hit a mech's reactor by firing a micro beam laser while facing 80 degrees to the side, shooting the ground, which would cause a random explosion which would randomly crit his entire team's reactors which would randomly cause the server itself to explode which would randomly generate a strange quark which would randomly hit the earth and randomly randomness randomfapp the shit fapp random!'

The PPCs and Gauss Rifle in MW3 were terrrrrrible :).

Lightning Cannon gets turned into Slow Blue Snot Launcher.
Magnetically Accelerated Super Cannon gets turned into Slow Green Snot Launcher.

I was most displeased.

Well the sfx changed with each version, which is why it doesn't make sense to me. But sure, if you're in love with a particular version then I guess you could say that.

I like the screaming ppc's in mech4 myself. Mech3's "fzzt" sounded lifeless.
