Question for devs - mech extensibility
« on: June 18, 2009, 08:31:55 AM »
Hi devs,

One thing ive been wondering for a while - how easily extensible is the current setup for adding more mechs to the game? I understand this is probably something that can be changed in the future, but im just wondering what it will be like in the next release.

So provided I could model/import/animate mechs myself, is the actual data for them (statistics, variants etc) stored in a file format I could access myself, or write a parser/writer program that would make this possible for me and others? Is there some other hard-coded limit or other bottleneck that would prevent 3rd parties from adding every single canon mech and variant on SARNA, provided they had the appropriate skills to do so?

I'm not a dev,of course, but I just wanted to poke my head in on this one.I strongly doubt the option of adding your own mechs into the game will be available. While I know your posing the question in a well meaning and good natured way(and i agree with you,I personally think it'd be awesome to have every single one of the canon mechs in the game),many people out there would only abuse the system to engineer ridiculously over powered mechs into the system.I for one don't want to see an atlas that can fire endless streams of lrms/ppc's/lasers/auto cannons , while zooming across the map at 200 kph wearing inpenetrable armor hehe.I'd say the best way to get these kinds of things in would be to try and squeeze your way into the dev team and offer your skills in that manner. That way you could work on the mechs from the inside instead of as a 3rd party player/developer.

No. There is no support for adding your own Mechs to the builds since there is alot of changes that require access to core game files to allow them to work. Come full release, we still plan on allowing for customization of existing Mechs and saving your own variants to do what you please with them.

Any Mech additions to MWLL will be looked at POST 1.0 release.

Kamikaze - thanks for your prompt response. This is what I assumed but I just thought id check.

Lucentdragon - balance wouldnt be a problem here as servers could be tailored to enforce their own list of allowed mechs as has been done in the past with previous MW leagues. If you play on an unrestricted server be prepared for something ridiculous like you described I guess. And I fully intend to attempt to squeeze my way in to the dev team when my degree finishes in 2 weeks  ;D but obviously to do what they actually need me to do rather than exactly what I want.

Well, everyone has to have a bit of fun every once in a while. I liked using no heat sometimes in MechWarrior, then I could max out my Novacat, and anything else with lasers.

NH/UA is a bit of a Mechwarrior 4 phenomenon and may not work with the MWLL weapon balance.

I'm kinda glad that we can't add our own mechs, I would want everything to be the same quality for the game if you know what I mean.

Also I never got into the no heat thing, realism for me is half the fun, there is no rush like being attacked on all sides the cavalry is just over the hill and after holding your own against your agressors you hear your computer spouting off "Heat level critical, shutting down" I used to sit at my computer freaking out being like "NOOOOOO why now oh why! My poor madcat/summoner!!!" :'( watching my mech get pounded was the worst feeling ever, but watching someone else over heat was priceless ;D

NH/UA is a bit of a Mechwarrior 4 phenomenon --

Not quite, they were also options in Netmech (MW2) and MW3. When those options are on, it didn't matter the game balance because those inherently are pretty much cheats enabled for everyone..
