Have you considered other game engines?
« on: July 27, 2007, 12:14:02 AM »
 Hi all,

Just discovered your mod. I've been dying for a good battletech sim since the original FASA turn based computer games first came out. What I've seen so far of your mod looks great, but I have to wonder why you would pick a yet to be released FPS engine to do the game. ArmA would probably be a better fit for a combined infantry, armor, air, and mech battlefield. The map scales in ArmA would be a huge advantage for mech sized tactical operations.

Also, did you plan for this mod to be more of a FPS type game or more of a simulation? I can't say I was a huge fan of how Microsoft dumbed down the mechwarrior line of games.

Best of luck with your project and hope to give it a spin when it's released.

Our stand point is thus: We wish to make a Battletech mod that is both fun and realistic. With realistic mech movement and control. However, this is a BATTLETECH mod, not soley a recreation of mechwarrior. We are taking this mod above and beyond where any Battletech game has gone. We are concentrating on all manner of combined arms that will allow the player to use a wide range of tactics on the battlefield. However, this is not a 'mech simulation! We are trying to come up with a good mix of tactical FPS and simulation that would appeal to a broader spectrum of players.

Something that Battletech or Mechwarrior hasn't done in many years is bring new players into the universe and excite a new generation of mechwarriors. Currently all the games and spinoffs are solely targetting the "hardcore" mech fans...not that i want to disapoint these types but i really want to expand the community and introduce people to the fantastic and deep universe that is battletech.

We are trying hard to balance fun gameplay while maintaining realism. We are not approaching this from too shallow or arcade-like way, trust me. A lot of talk about realism goes on when we discuss the mod. However, its easier to take ETQW and add a bit more realism then it is to take ArmA and make it more flashy. I hope you understand what I'm saying. I appreciate your concern however. I feel though that ArmA is too realistic for such a mod as ours. There is no reason it needs to be that realistic. Hell, I don't want it to be.

Hey there tempered and welcome to the forum glad to have someone putting out suggestions around here :D

Not to steal your thunder but we've actually had this same discussion already regarding the ArmA engine. Check out this thread to get a feel for why we aren't using that particular engine

(although we have another project planned already for a newer engine coming out soon)
hush hush though.

You guys certainly seem to know exactly what you want from this mod, which is a great thing.  But I still want my ultimate realistic mech sim, dammit  ;D    A Battletech mod is the next best thing in the meantime.
