Loosen up the mechs
« on: July 15, 2009, 06:27:04 AM »
I just watched the video. Absolutely. Stunning. I especially loved the scenery. I can not wait to play this game.

There's one thing that I'd like to see worked on a bit, though. When the mechs move at a pace much faster than a walk, they don't change their movement. they just walk faster. I think running and walking should be different motions. They mechs need to bounce around a bit. The cockpit should sway from side to side or forward and back. Make these things flop around more.

I thought that mechwarrior 4 did a great job at capturing this. I loved how the cockpits flopped around especially on the lighter mechs. When the whole mech is animated by the movement rather than the legs power walking across the map, you really get more of a feeling of just how huge these things are and it does volumes for the gameplay experience.

That said, I was hugely impressed with the latest video. The scenery, explosions, models, all amazing. Keep up the awesome work.

I agree that the "bobbing" and "swaying" of mechs in previous MW games made movement seem more natural. It gave alot of live to the models.

A dev has explained that the reason you do not see the same amount of motion in MWLL mechs is a limitation of the crysis engine.  Something along the lines of a player's view point being fixed in space and if there were to have a bouncing motion, the players screen would be shaking all over the place... making it very difficult to see out of the cockpit. Also something about your player model would be clipping throug the mech model as well.

It may be fixed, it may not. They did try what you are asking and for sake of gameplay had to drop it.

Hmm. That's interesting. So the crysis game engine makes things more realistic. In that case, I still don't think i'd mind at least a tiny bit of bobbing and swaying from the cockpit view. I think there actually was some in mw3 and mw4. Yeah if the mechs were slowed down a bit and some slight swaying was introduced, i think that would be awesome. especially if third person view was available.

even still. do you think you'd mind some bobbing in the cockpit. it'd be more realistic than a smooth ride.

I did some visual tests with this because I wanted to see how much cockpit rumble you get.  You can check out the vids in the suggestions/ideas area:

http://www.mechlivinglegends.net/forum/index.php/topic,5180.msg67929.html#new

Without any stablization you will get a lot, but if they can implement some camera and torso tracking it might let them make more fluid motion for the mechs.  They mentioned that they are working on different solutions, so hopefully they come up with something.

Do not state the obvious to the devs, they really don't like that. I wouldnt like it either, actually

Ahha, I too hate third person...ruins modern shooters and rpg's for me.

I didn't mean to state the obvious. It's my opinion that bobbing and swaying in the cockpit would be not only tolerable, but actually a cool feature of the game.

We agree, which is why we're trying to come up with a solution, but as has been said a couple of times, the direct approach isn't possible, because the bobbing and swaying simply is NOT tolerable like that. We've been trying that and believe me when I say it felt like riding a skateboard on a dirt track.

No, because then you'd have the sadistic whiners who'd cry about it's removal.
