Need for Speed: Shift
« on: September 17, 2009, 04:22:52 AM »
So i see that this came out a few days ago, anybody played it? I just purchased it from Steam, so i'll prolly have it in the morning. TBH, I have high hopes for this game. EA is promising a real sim feel to the game, which is what i'm really looking forward to. Personally I really like racing sims like Forza and GTA, but have always wanted something on the pc so i can actually make use of my Logitech G25 wheel set.

I'm kinda scared that this will be another ProStreet, in that it says its lifelike, but it was still an arcade. at one point in time, i had a supercharged Corvette making LESS than its stock horsepower....i mean really? how?

i guess i'll let yall know in the morning how it pans out.

Please do, I'm bored of NFSU2.  I want to be able to mod everything on a car, but still have fun, challenging, yet realistic gameplay.  NFSU2 had alot of things that pissed me off, but I haven't been "into" car games all that much to buy the new ones.

Personally, I don't like racing games (the only exception being Wipeout^^') and especially not racing sims, which means I can't be certain about this, but would you really call GTA a racing SIM? o_O

Live for Speed, rFactor, Richard Burns Rally (with mods), GTR1/2, GTR Evo, Race '07, NetKarPro, iRacing.. there's a ton of realistic racers that will definitely put your G25 to the test. I highly recommend investing in a TrackIR as well for the racing!

GTA...lol I meant Gran Tourismo.

I actually play Live for speed quite often. A friend and I race together a lot.

also, I love wipeout, but I haven't plaed a newer version than wip3out. Its the only reason I still have a ps1.

Rfactor is lots of fun. Nice Physics and great Sound.

I love the original GTR. GTR2 is a total gamepad racer IMHO.

I will try the Shift demo when it comes out, but as a sim racer (LFS Rfactor GTR1 RBR) im skeptical. I think it will be more like GRID than Forza.

I just love it when your wheels can block while braking, sliding abound like a mf.

I'll have to admit that I'm not very good at the game, played Wipeout HD online once, was 7/8 and the last one was afk^^'

I'm downloading it right now, Ill tell ya when its done. But if you want a good racing game, try Race Driver GRID. Its a bit arcadey but its still more of a racing sim for me. With racing wheel and a cockpit view its one hack of a ride!

Good news!

I've been playing shift most of the morning, and i have to say, its about as close to a sim as gran tourismo. It doesnt feel too arcade, but at least in Experienced and Pro modes, if feels rather genuine. I definitely recommend picking this one up. They did a great job.

It's not bad, but I would highly recommend using a wheel for the sim experience.. playing it (on PC) with a controller makes it feel very arcadish!

ok, so after some i've gotten some playtime in, i'm beginning to find it fairly arcadish. for one, I'm doing a Camaro vs Challenger event, and for some reason i cant get the Camaro to oversteer into the corners. You would think that a car with 425hp, you would be able to kick the back end out just a little bit. Only thing that kicks out is it nasty front end and understeer off the track. Also i honestly can tell the difference between an AWD and FWD car. They both feel very "numb".

What are your difficulty/assists settings? Without any assists other than ABS, I haven't had a problem getting it to kick out.. Also, if you do a brake upgrade III, you can change up the brake bias to help get the car to kick out. I've had no problems in differentiating AWD and FWD..

I have it set to pro, but I had the manufacture assists on. Come to find out, that it was the stability control that was doing that. Now with that corrected, I'm having a hell of a time trying to get my Cayman S to act like a proper race car. It tends to be a little boucy at speed, but if I correct the bou,ce then I lose cornering almost completely.

Also, you noticed how either aggressive/ glued the AI is to their racing line? Tbh its getting rather annoying.

I tried to look for a wheel, but because I want one with a clutch and 6 speed shifter (not paddles), I'm having difficulties finding one that's even remotely near my price range ($300 is way too much).
