Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising
« on: October 14, 2009, 03:33:50 AM »
This has been my distraction of late, I like the good mix of realism and gameplay, it's challenging, but I really enjoy it.  I love the bullet drop, actually makes it feel like you're shooting a gun and not a laser whose bullet disappears at it's range.  Some of the menu systems are clunky, but overall, very enjoyable.  Oh, and I play it for PC.

Yeah i have seen this. I've looked at it for a long time (couple of days :P) in contemplation. The only thing i am worried about is it's longevity. Sure a great campaign is nice but the multiplayer is what makes me come back. Still waiting on some intel on that before making a final decision.
All of my posts are of my personal opinions unless obviously otherwise.

Try playing it on the most difficult setting, then you wont get the feeling it's a mix of playability and realism, only just brutal realism ;)

Yeah I got it the other day, its great fun but is a obvious consul port.

I wish on the highest difficulty setting though you still had the frekin compass, as long as it still didn't show where the enemy is.

I would love to get a 4 person coop going this saturday though if anyone is interested

honestly, I think that everything but the menus are geared for PC.  I've got my entire nostromo bound and use every key and there are still 2 or 3 on the keyboard I need.

Tried it out and two things really kills the fun for me:
1) I can't tell my squad to get the fapp down and stay out of sight.
Makes approaching a group of enemies undetected near impossible.
2)AI seeing you through foliage and hedges...
I'm prone in some grass, can't see a thing because of it, go over the top of a hill (still "hidden" in the grass) and BAM headshot from some sniper I couldn't see.
Same thing with hedges, shrubs etc. Seems like anything that can be shot through is transparent to AI.

I could name a few other things that I find quite annoying, but those two are the most important points...

I keep reading reviews and user comments that rave about the AI.  So far I have not seen anything that warrants such praise.

All told I doubt I will finish the game.  ArmA 2 is coming in next week so that will be my poison.

You are going to be heavily disappointed, sorry :(

The full ArmA2 game isn't bad...the demo was HORID
If you like hardcore milsims that is that are not neccessarily set up to be fun foremost

OFP:DR has much better gameplay IMO

AI wise I have not really had any issues either way other then whats the norm for modern AI,
meaning the occasional lapse of stupidity.  Sometimes enemy snipers do seem to have superhuman
eyesight however but there isn't a constant plague of snipers in the game so it isn't a big deal.

I've played some custom ArmA2 missions that are a lot of fun and are not set up to be confusing as hell (they are built like the first few campaign ArmA2 missions).  Add that with mods like JTD's Smoke and Fire (basically things catch fire and produce billowing smoke clouds), VopSound2.1 (sound mod), etc it's quite a good realism experience.

I just wish the controls wern't clunky and the performance was better optimized :(

Oh and I wish the multiplayer wasn't a bunch of boring ass co-op "enter area, kill all AI in area, rinse repeat".  That's largely a problem with the mission scripters who made the mission, and not the game itself though.

1) you can give your squad a move order and change their RoE so they don't fire and advance on your own, or just change their RoE and they won't fire until told to do so and they'll change stance along with you.

2) I haven't had this issue, I tend to kill them all from 200+m out and at that range even if they're shooting at muzzle flashes, they can't really hit me.  I've never been shot by a sniper, I tend to pick them off because I tend to play as one.

Cujo,

as we are in the same Timezone, I look forward to playing OPFLASH2 with you....just ordered it Thursday on Amazon, so next weekend at the latest (got the free shipping option)

the co-op campaign mode is why I purchased it, and the realism which is above Red Orchestra/Darkest Hour level....IMHO

I'll check my schedule for next weekend, this weekend sucks because I have 2 hw assignments (heat transfer and mech. vibes), a lab report, and an exam (heat transfer) all due/on monday.
