Crysis 1/2 off on Steam this weekend!
« on: November 13, 2009, 12:31:24 AM »
So I just discovered this site.
I LOVE MW games! Played them for hours back in the day.
I open up Steam and see that Crysis, which I do not own is 1/2 price this weekend...

It is Fate....  8)

So that is all I need to be ready for this I guess...

Steam is great, it's much better than D2D as far as a digital download service.  You have all your games for life, and all you have to do is log into your steam account on any computer and it will automatically download your entire library for you. Plus the community aspects, friends, gifting, really REALLY awesome deals (they do weekend deals like this all of the time, and free-weekends), preloading games that haven't come out yet so you get them "day 1", etc.... it's easily the best digital distribution method out there by far IMO, they really do it right.

D2D is just a raw download, and they only give you the download once for life.  No redownloading, no automatic updates (which you can disable with Steam), and frequently there have been installation/game patch incompatability issues with D2D versions of games, etc.

If you're not a fan of having a unified games platform to run some of your games on then you're better off just getting a boxed set from Amazon or a local store, which is what I sometimes do.  Atleast then you can have a physical copy for life and be able to use it as much as you need to between computers etc (most of the time)

steam bites. for the many reasons already said and, if say steam were to go out of buisness all your games are.... gone , if ya lose internet .. ya cant play, if ya want to play a single player game ..ya STILL have to be online , if ya just use your comp to play games offline and only have dialup that steam game ya just bought is useless. D2D games u can at least put on a disk and reinstall when ya want and even play when ya want (dont need the internet to play or reinstall) sorry i had to rant, i just bought my first  steam game and am kinda mad hehe

I would check D2D out again Korjax. I know at least for myself, I can download 3 games that I bought at the beginning of 2006. This of course would run into some of the same problems others are talking about with the "If Steam goes out of business" type hypothetical, or if you forgot your login, but my login is linked directly to my Gamespy/Fileplanet/whatever else they linked together account.

You can run Steam in Offline mode, not requiring your to be connected.  Of course you can't be in offline mode forever, but the good thing is 99% of households who would use digital distribution are going to be connected to the internet 24/7 anyways, since this IS the 21st century.  If your internet ever goes out though for a few days, the option is there.

Also it's already been said from Valve if their company ever goes out of business (which will never happen as long as video games are in business seeing as they are the #1 digital distribution front in the world and a AAA game developer), that they will release a patch to all systems that will disable the need to run steam to run steam-bought games.

Also who uses dial up anymore?  You wouldn't be doing game downloads in the first place if you don't have good internet, it simply isn't an option at all in that case. Digital Distribution (aka buying games for downloading) is generally a market for people who have reliable internet connections, and something that appeals to those types of people.  And steam really does it better than anyone else from all I've experienced.
