Best advice I can give is pick your faction. Then read EVERY DANG BOOK on that faction. Then and only then branch out, you will find you will read the other's tales from the perspective of your faction, ta da, you are now a battletech character.

Warrior series
Blood of Kerensky
Bred for war
Legend of the Jade Phoenix
Twilight of the clans

Bred for War is not essential but it takes place in 3057 at the start of the Refusal war, between the other books and helps tie it all together.

the Warrior series made so many things fall into place, and the fourth succession war starts with such class...

there's tons of them for free or like $2 plus shipping on amazon.com, $4 for a book shipped to you....is pretty good

I had almost a complete collection... but once MW4 died out I lost interest in the "universe" so I sold them all at at half price book store for $76.

Whoops.

I wish I'd have kept them to read again since this game has renewed my interest.

Start with the Kerensky trilogy.

I have always enjoyed the sourcebooks over the novels. The Field Manuals and now the awesome Handbooks give you awesome insight into the factions and the TROs are always awesome.

I have every single battletech sourcebook that I know to be available in PDF form (which most if not all are - although some are not officially available) they are amazing reads.

"Far country" was ok.. but not great
LOL nice to see they say publication dates and not written date.
Warrior Series was written in 1986 but put on hold. ( read Michael A. Stackpole's page)

Seems the novels are not very easy to find in the uk.

The early novels are practicle impossible!  I have managed to buy the very first bettletech novel printed Book one of The saga of the grey death legion, and just spent 2 hours searching online to buy book 2 and 3. i could only find book3 in the uk for £34!!!  :o

In the end i did find book 2 and 3 from a secound hand book seller in the USA and bought them booth for $11, I got to pay the international shipping costs though :-\

all the early Battletech books are out of print, I have made it my goal to track down and buy every one!
