Beta Feedback
« on: December 28, 2009, 02:37:52 PM »
To start off, I must first say that I thoroughly enjoy this beta, and that it brings me back to the days of MW 2 and MW 3. Aside from the CTD's every 30 minutes, which is mostly the cause of the unstable cysis platform, the mod has alot of potential, and it may even become the game to precede Mechwarrior 5. However, I feel that some of the aspects of the beta could be changed to represent a better mech experience.

What I Feel Could Change

-The HUD inside the mechs feels a bit too small and discreet. To make the player feel immersed in the mech experience, the HUD should be more spread out, offer a bit more information and make itself more noticeable. The circular radar is fine, however I feel the map should be a square as to provide the player with the largest map view possible.

-The zoom inside the mechs just doesn't feel right to me. I think it would be better if it was something along the lines of the zoom in MW 3. You could have one level of zoom, as is currently offered in the standard optics, but instead of zooming in a second time with the enhanced optics, the image of the mech you are targeting comes up in a box beside/around the cross hair (see image below).

-Customization in a mech game is a must. I know this is the first beta and I know it does not include all features. However I do not know if there are plans to include mech customization into this mod. As such I will state my ideas anyways. The standard options that you offer (Prime, A,B etc. variants) are well balanced and are good for those who do not like to personalize their mech to their fighting style, and should be kept. However I think that the "Loadout" tab on the purchase screen could be changed into a mech editor, allowing the player to change heatsinks, weapons, weapon groups, paint, etc. (see image below)

-The cockpits in the mech seem a bit too simple. I understand that this may also be a work in progress, however I think that the cockpits should be filled with screens and control surfaces, as to immerse the player and to make the feel as if they are actually piloting a complex, 40+ tonne vehicle of war. Two cockpits that fit this criteria, and are absolutely beautiful are the Owens and the Madcat MK1. However there are two cockpits which are quite disappointing; the Shadowcat and the Uller.

-The Light mechs seem to be a little bit too light. They walk at very high speeds, and they seem to just glide along the landscape. While they may be light mechs, they are heavier than most tanks. This point is mostly just nitpicking, and could be fixed with a slight change to make the walk of the mechs a little bit more lumbering. The other mech classes all feel like they have their respective weights, and when you power them up and crank the throttle, you really feel like your moving a 100+ tonne mech.

-There should be some form of a head movement when in the mech's cockpit. It is much easier to turn your head than it is to swing the torso of a mech in that direction to look.

Again, I am enjoying the beta, and I thank the dev team for their hard work and dedication.
If anyone feels I have missed something, or I am wrong in my feedback, feel free to comment and add your two cents.

I do like the way zoom is done in this game. I wouldn't change it. We don't really need square and circle zoom windows coming up just because that's how all the previous mech games have done it.

I prefer the way the other mech games did it because it still allows you to be situationally aware. It allows me to see my surroundings and other enemies that may be closer than the one I am targeting while still letting me focus on my main target.

The HUD has actually been scaled down in size because earlier versions were generally felt to be to intrusive on the players vision. Although it and the mech interiors are a WIP as is everything in the Beta some of the simpleness is intentional to keep from distracting the pilot. Not good to be admiring the pretty lights and get a Gauss in the face because you were not paying attention to your opponent.     ;)

I'm a fan of simple and functionality, if you don't need to have a spread out hud like for lower resolution monitors that you played on with older Mechwarrior games. Then why not have a nice sleek HuD that lets you take in all the information you need at a glance down.

I share the original poster's view on the second level of zoom, for the reason of situational awareness.

MechLab and custom user configurations is something that IS planned for the future, but I cannot provide an ETA at the moment.  The BETA is intended to obtain community feedback and identify bugs and inefficiencies, there were specific things that have been left out due to lack of resources and a need to release within a timely manner (i.e. BA claw, MechLab, some vehicles, extended game modes).

As far as a second level of zoom, you will see that some of the 'Mechs have "enhanced optics" and others have "standard optics".  Those with standard have 1 level of zoom, those with enhanced have 2 levels of zoom.

Not all of the 'Mech and vehicle cockpits have been completed, if something seems rather plain, it's probably a placeholder.

As far as "free look" within the 'Mech cockpits, the Crysis engine does not natively support this technology.  While I'm sure we could hack it in (as we did for walking vehicles) it would add another layer of complexity to the control schema.

I understand this but I was suggesting the old way for the situational awareness, as zooming in the whole view on one specific spot removes most of your close in vision, allowing pesky little BA's to sneak up under your radar, or a light mech to get close to you without you noticing (if you aren't paying attention to your radar)

The only thing I have for the mech customization feature is to leave in the ability for stock variants and for creating variants that may be approved by admins on the server.   As much as I love the ability to totally customize your mech in the end everyone creates the 1 hit wonders and it ruins the entire mech experience.

In mech 4 mercenaries I resorted to only playing stock servers because playing non stock became no fun at all.  So the option must remain for the server admin to allow player customizations or only allow variants approved and installed by the admin.

I would consider this a logical and reasonable tradeoff.  If you have your face buried in a scoped weapon it is very likely that your situational awareness will drop, creating an opportunity for an apt enemy to get the drop on you.  This is no different than a thousand other games that have scoped weapon options.

If I see an Uller A posted up on a ridge and relatively immobile it's going to be a good candidate for ambushing as a BA.  In all likelyhood that pilot is zoomed in and sniping at distant enemies, and I can sneak up on him, staying outside of the 100m detect range for BA, and start working his back armour with PPC and Beam laser.

BA are not necessarily "fearsome" but they can be highly annoying and have the benefit of being able to shoot at a much larger target than themselves.  If you can get a C8 plant on damaged 'Mech back armour you can do nasty damage.

If customizations are going in, please don't go straight by the board game rules and allow full customization. For all MW4's faults, I thought its implementation of the 'Mech lab was much more in tune with the BT universe than being able to cram your legs full of ERMLs and run a laser boat as in the previous games.

Our approach to Mech customization has been explained quite a while ago in a short video:

Quote myself:

At first: This Mod is awesome. Fact.

But i think the modification needs enhanced cockpits with more functionality. The HUD (Radar etc.) should be hard implemented into the cockpit instruments. I seen this at least in Armed Assault 2 in a AH-64 or something.

Look at these pictures on the attachment:
