[requirements] Cheapest GPU for MWLL high-details?
« on: January 03, 2010, 09:04:15 PM »
Heya folks,
I have one small problem,

About 2-3 months ago I bought a PC - i7, 2gigs RAM, and (miserable) Nvidia 8400 GS. Now, the problem is that the MWLL is playable only on low details and well... looks more or less like MW2. :P I think I'll get a new GPU (duh, this mod will cost me hell of a money... first buying crysis, now GPU, what next?! ::) ), so here is a question:

What's the cheapest GPU to play MWLL smooth on high details? (in 1440x900 or something about it)

anyone have some hints?

Yeah, the original crysis caused me to upgrade a couple years back.  still using all the same components except I finally upgraded the video card.

Im using:
quad core extreme E6700
4 gigs dual channel ddr2 800
2 patriot ssds striped
bfg gtx 295 (the new card)
running win 7 64 bit

After playing this mod, I was about to go out and buy a new mobo, ram, & i7 but first I found some tweaks like "Cuban-Ultima-Doom-Sword's Custom Crysis Configs [CCC] [Triple "C" Pack]" and some other tips..

It helped, bit I cant play everything maxed...  I have it set to high at 1280x1024 and it stills studders here and there separately from the lag.  Im thinking, to hold off on upgrades till its out of beta, then find out how much you need to upgrade.

I can play just about every other game out in 1900x1200 with everything maxed.  MW2, Stalkers, Crysis's, ect..

one more thing...  these maps are massive..  Im sure in the release, the fewer players, the less of the map will be open.  That will reduce lag big time!

As the code gets better, more efficient, everything will run and look better on less.

First off we need to know if that system has a decent power supply. Most high end cards, while getting more efficient, still suck a lot of juice. From the looks of things I'm guessing you bought that PC from a big-name manufacturer, like Dell or HP, right?

Nope, it's set up from parts. But I have quite decent power unit - 600W. Yet thanks for pointing out an important thing :) perhaps some other ppl will find it helpful :)

I needed a PC with uber-CPU, the rest didn't matter much (it's for work after all... at least: was till I noticed MWLL is out :D).

Shark - good point about RAM, but now everything shows me that the biggest problem I have is the graphics card. RAM is next on the list ;) after next payment day, so... february  ;D

Barbaric Soul - the SLI cards won't work for me... it's bit too expensive.

What? It shudders with GTX 295?! oh.... I feel like my dreams about smooth gameplay on high details were just spoiled.... that card isn't even in majority of shops in my reach! :-\ And even if it is - it's bit too expensive. :'(
You play with FSAA?

BTW:
What about ATI cards? Perhaps there's something with better performance/cost ratio? ;)

I wasn't posting that as a recommendation. I posted that because of what pmorelli posted. My two GTX280 cards are about equal to a single GTX295 in graphics power. He should be getting better performance than he is.

As for a recommedation, I suggest the ATI 5850(around $300) or 5870(around $400). I'm actually in the middle of trading my GTX280 cards and $100 for a 5870(used GTX280 cards sell for about $150 apeice right now). Also, considering one of my GTX280 cards give me 30-35 fps at very high settings at 1920*1200 res, a GTX275(which is equal to a single GTX280 according to benchmarks) should give 40-45 fps at very high setting, 1440*900 res.

this might help you decide on a card

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/HIS/HD_5770/10.html

that page shows some charts comparing various video cards performance in crysis at different resolutions.

Thanks man! ;D That helped a lot!

I think I'll go for HD 5770 - it's cheaper than GTX 260 (not saying about other GTXes) and I'll have spare cash for RAM ^_^ :)

Salute!

I'm considering the purchase of a new computer. MWLL may be a Mod I participate in. Price is important and the HD Pavillion Elite seems to be the best with the components I need. However, I looked at comparing Graphics Cards and the FPS of each and I am somewhat confused. This is not uncommon for me as I know so little about them.

The particular machine I have in mind has an ATI Radeon HD 4650 Garphics Card. Since I didn't see that card listed, would this card function well in MWLL?

Here is the entire componant/software run down:

 Product Features
◦From our expanded online assortment; not available in all Best Buy stores
◦Intel® Core™ i7-860 processor
Features 1MB L2 and 8MB shared L3 cache with QPI technology and 2.8GHz processor speed.
◦Intel® Turbo Boost Technology
Increases processor speed at peak times for power when you need it most.
◦8GB PC3-10600 DDR3 SDRAM
For multitasking power, expandable to 16GB.
◦Blu-ray Disc player with multiformat DVD±RW/CD-RW drive with double-layer support

◦ATI Radeon HD 4650 graphics
With 1GB dedicated video memory and Microsoft DirectX 10.1 support. HDMI and DVI interfaces for connecting HD components. High-definition audio configurable for up to 8 speakers to add immersive sound to the system.
◦15-in-1 digital media reader
Supports SmartMedia, xD-Picture Card, MultiMediaCard, Secure Digital, miniSD, CompactFlash I/II, Microdrive, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO, Memory Stick Duo and Memory Stick PRO Duo.
◦Also supports Reduced-Size MultiMediaCard (RS-MMC), MultiMediaCard Mobile and MultiMediaCard Plus.
◦1 IEEE 1394 (FireWire) interface and 9 high-speed USB 2.0 ports
For fast digital data transfer and easy peripheral connectivity.
◦Built-in high-speed wireless LAN (802.11a/b/g/n)
Wirelessly connects to the Internet.
◦Built-in 10/100/1000Base-T Ethernet LAN
For quick and easy wired Web connection.
◦Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Edition 64-bit operating system preinstalled
Provides a stable operating platform to launch games, programs and applications.
◦Software package included
With HP MediaSmart Suite, CyberLink DVD Suite Deluxe, Microsoft Works 9 and more. 60-day trial of Microsoft Office Home and Student Edition 2007 also included.

Any input would be welcome. The cost of this computer is $1,130.00 and I see that building one would take much more cash than I care to spend atm.

Thank you,

Don't get a prebuilt! If you can't do it yourself go to a little shop around town

This article should provide a good reference chart, which is also up to date with prices, on which Card would be a good fit for you on a budget. Note that any card trying to use FSAA in Crysis will get hammered, including the 5970 HD and 295 GTX. Also, a few older cards that you can find on the cheap, like a 9800 GT for ~$100, should provide plenty of power on medium/high settings at the slightly lower resolutions. Personally, I don't see a huge difference between the two settings in MWLL as much as in the MP and SP versions of Crysis.

A 600 W Power Supply should be ample for most cards as long as its only one card, and that it has the neccesary power connectors (some require 1 6-pin, the most common, while others require 1 8-pin, 2 6-pins, or one of each.) However, the brand and rail ampage also play a role. See if you can get the specs on the PSU, as some of them have a puny 12V rail which won't properly power a beast like a 58xx or 275 GTX.

Also, Try to avoid at all costs a mid-range card like 46xx or 96xx/86xx. They're both pricy and underpowered for Crysis.
