making custom maps for mwll
« on: January 08, 2010, 06:03:30 AM »
i browsed the forums a little for topics about mapping, whats possible whats not etc, but i didnt find answers to my questions.

first off, i do not want to apply or something.
i know my way around sandbox and basics of geo control, but im far away from being a mapper for shipping titles.
what i want to do is create a map for myself to see what i can do in mwll.

my questions are:

- is it possible right now to add your own map into mwll, and make it playable?
- why do you have to hide the horizon? i read about it somewhere on a sidenote.
- is there some kind of level property that controls the "temperature" of a map, as in how much heat is built up?
are lava maps really hotter, does standing in water help you cool off, would a frozen map be laser heaven?
- how big should a medium sized solaris arena map be (x by y) (i know it was written somewhere but i cant find it anymore)

id appreciate it if a mapper from the team could help me out a bit.

more or less yes. You cannot add it to  the mod, but you can play MWLL on your map.

performance on certain type of maps.

From what I've seen - there's no heat difference between inferno and the frozen space map (E...something).

We are not yet fully supporting custom maps yet. We will when we get the autodownloader for wars.

Hiding the horizon has nothing to with performance, but seeing the edge of the map is breaks the illusion and is terrible mapping. As for heatzones, there is indeed a difference between maps. Your example is inferno and extremity is bad actually. Inferno is roasting hot and extremity is super hot in the day and freezing at night.

I'm aware of that, but I want to start early, as I'm rather slow.  ;)

Ah, so its about the actual border between the map and the "void"; not about a beach where you can see across the water into the distant fog, right?

So there is a way to determine the heat environment. How do you do that - or is it a secret?

And what about the mapsize, would 2048x2048 playzone and 4096x4096 mapsize be ok?

Just have a map downloads section and make it the server admins responsibilty to get the map uploaded to their server or host and to distribute the maps to the players. Easy to do.
<setting setting="net_mapDownloadURL http://www.somewebpage.com/mapname.zip"/>

By edge of the map i mean the order/edge of the terrain. Heatzones are set up using flowgraphs. All of our maps are 8192 with a play area roughly 1/2 - 2/3.
