32 bit vs 64 bit, DX9 vs DX10 Performance
« on: January 10, 2010, 03:01:10 AM »
I love this mod.  It's everything I've been wanting for the past 10 years.  ;D

I just did some testing with Crysis and MWLL performance.  I've found no significant performance difference between 32 and 64 bit, but a good boost in performance by forcing DirectX 9. I couldn't tell much of a visual difference between DX9 and DX10, so the performance boost is definitely worth it for me.

All numbers are the average of 4 runs using the built-in Crysis benchmark tool:

GPU Benchmark Results
 DX9    DX10
32-bit |  30.124.3
64-bit |  30.024.4

CPU2 Benchmark Results
 DX9    DX10
32-bit |  17.315.4
64-bit |  17.415.5

Tests were done at 1680 x 1050, using CCC Config 2.21 at level-5, which gives me better performance and visual quality.

DX9 gives me better performance in MWLL too, as expected from these results.  32-bit seems to be a little more stable for me.  I've only had a couple of crashes.

If you want to force DX9:
Running from Steam: In my games, right click on Crysis, go to Properties / Set launch options.  Add -dx9
Desktop shortcut: Add -dx9 to the end of the Target line, so that it looks something like this: "C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\Crytek\Crysis\bin32\Crysis.exe" -mod mwll -dx9

My system:
Windows 7 64-bit
Core i5-750
Biostar P55 motherboard
4GB DDR3
GTS 250 1GB
stock clocks, newest non-beta drivers and directx

Hope this helps someone  :)

i have been running the 1.31 CCC build, set to low-med or med, cant remember now, forcing dx9, running 64bit, guess i should run the benchmark, but theres no sense in comparing different resolutions, mine would be at 1440x900

forcing dx9 made the biggest difference for me also

Ok, it's worth a test, so how do you force DX9?

-DX9 after the .exe Direwolf
wont be able to play on DX10 servers though.

Thanks Cos.

I just gave it a test and my FPS went up by around 10-15.

It's a bit of a bugger about not being able to join DX10 servers using this though.

Is there a way to set the resolution in the shortcut?  I wouldn't mind having seperate shortcuts for Single and Eyefinity monitors.  It's a bit of pain switching between them.

Yup,  DX10 detroys your FPS even if you dont have it on DX10 graphic settings (Very high). DX10 running DX9 graphics = loss of at least 10fps, which is stupid but there we go.

Since my average FPS is over 40 in DX10 I don't see the point in disabling dx10 for a boost in fps that won't do anything. However if your FPS is like averaging at 20, then going DX9 will greatly improve gameplay.

Crysis doesn't seem to use x64 that well at all, since the difference is <1% but my motto is, if you got x64 windows why the hell not!

As for MWLL there is no reason to run servers in DX10. Features like ToD and destructible objects work on DX9 with MWLL.

I have similar performance on 32bit vs 64bit HOWEVER, a lot less shuttering and much faster map loads when I run the game in 64bit. Everything seems to be smoother and less hiccups whenever i go into menus while on server etc, play is a lot smoother, this could be simply result that in 64bit crysis has access to more memory....

Perhaps the MWLL Team might consider only allowing dedicated servers to run in DX9 mode in a future update?

There is a reason DX10 servers exist, it's to stop DX9 people having a HUGE advantage over DX10 players. Normally DX10 gives more particle and dust effects etc, which means they generally can't see as far, or see through stuff DX9 players can.

Thus DX10 players if they want to play with DX10 settings will be at very unfair disadvantage just because they have the graphic settings up to make the game look pretty ^^.

Now since the game is still in beta, and there is server lag, and glitches etc, people aren't really bothered about hosting Dx10 matches to make the problem worse. But when these problems get fixed, I really hope people start hosting DX10 servers.

I found how painful it can be on Sandblasted when you walk from IS base towards the center. Sun rays and dust make it harder to spot anything there than it was with DX9 on lower details.

Looks badass, though :)

Wish we had a US or West Coast DX10 server up.

I dunno, i'm running in DX10 and don't seem to have any problems and actually my game becomes really unstable when i try to run in dx9.  To add to the weirdness, when i'm in 32 bit mode, i get pings in the 200s, in 64bit mode, i'm back down to the 20-30s
