Engines
« on: January 13, 2010, 03:25:35 AM »
So I stole a madcat mkii with a heavily damaged engine, repaired it, and saw that the cockpit was repaired and the rest of the armor but the engine was never repped.

Are engine reparations bugged? Is this gonna be fixed?

Was your back black (I think this is the "BT" piece)?  You cannot repair destroyed parts, only damaged ones... found that out yesterday!

Well, I know sometimes when you repair a damaged leg it doesn't restore your speed but other times it does so I'm guessing it's a bug.

If you had bt gone then that means damage to engine and that cannot be repaired.

Zeta is indeed correct. This isn't a bug. When a engine is damaged it isn't repaired. same thing when you lose a limb, you wont see that lib repaired. But the engine damage is in discussion right now, and may change. Until then, when your back plate turns black, that means your engine is pretty much destroyed. So keep that in mind!

So is speed not being restored when you repair a damaged leg intended?

basically, repairing only does two things
1) replaces lost armor
2) replaces spent coolant

It's kinda miss leading since it actually doesn't repair any destroyed components/limbs/weapons

keep in mind when we implement trade in system you will be able to sell it and get a better mech, so this will be a thing of the past!

You still need the engine to power the legs--just another reason not to give your back to the enemy.

When there is a trade in system, do you get 100% of the value of the mech? If so, why should I ever repair, when I could just sell it back, and buy the same thing? replacing all my destroyed components. if its less than 100%, a Mech with destroyed engine/components is much worse than a cheaper mech that is in perfect condition.

Perhaps in the future there will be some kind of mobile repair vehicle where getting your mech only partially repaired makes sense. But IMHO once there is a trade-in system, I would always sell a damaged mech back.

Too soon to tell, whatever the thoughts are, they're subject to change and balancing.

IMO, any cash-for-clunkers program in MWLL would need to have some discount factor for your sell-backs (base discount eg. 50% of mech cost + reductions for destroyed/damaged parts).  This feature is not intended to allow you to never spend money, only help you out if your mech is obsolete and you need to upgrade anyways, or if a component is destroyed and your mech has become worthless.  (well, not only, I am looking forward to, one day, running out in a BA and coming back with a salvaged mech to sell)

If there is no base discount, I can see this as one potential way to get around any anti-pooling features that are implemented in the future (eg. player 1 purchased 20k mech and gives it to player 2, player 2 sells it for full cost, effectively transferring 20k which might otherwise be disallowed)
