It happens when you cause friendly damage, it's subtracting from your total.

This is usually correlated with what sounds like an "energy critical" voiceover, and an inability to use nightvision (gets automatically turned off). What's happening here?

You have been hit by a PPC. It has a EMP discharge which breaks your HUD (and infrared).

Here is my question, why doesn't our equipment shutdown when we get caught in an EMP (I can't type that without thinking of RvB) "Whats an E.M.P.?Everyone knows it's an Emp!"

E.M.P. stands for Electro Magnetic Pulse.
I found my old mwl sig.

I'm that guy that loved to launch his Shadow Cat into the air, then get shot up into peices, and whatch the wreckage fall from the sky on to your daishi's head. "Death From Above" my favorite from MW4. I also loved to aim my Ejecting Pod at you. SCat Forever!

The Day I command my own clan is the day when SCat's rain from the sky.

I've also noticed you lose c-bills when you hurt your own mech. Via a core explosion you caused for example.

Cause Mechs are more resilient than that :p

Though in MW4 getting hit by a PPC did momentarily scramble your hud and turn it more transparent.

In MW3 your HUD could be permanently damaged, making it unusable, forcing you to drive your mech with intuition alone :)

Yeah, more permanent damage as the 'mech got more and more damaged would be cool, like permanently flickering/destroyed bits of HUD when cockpit takes heavy damage, 'mech much more prone to fall over if gyro is damaged, etc. I'm sure stuff like this will make it in for the final version though.
