VTOL landing is a bit easier, what I do is go in sideways, tap W like a 4channer would F5, and gradually slow down as you near the bay so you don't tip over. It's a bit hard to explain but basically my control movement is something around:
Go to bay head-on
Use Shift+W, and taper off on it as you get ~200m to the bay
at ~150m, start turning until you are parallel to bay (or perpendicular to runway)
at 100m, hit W about 2-3 times a second, at 50, only once.
Just before you hit the ground, power off and you should hit with a slight thud.
Funny story, I was trying to land a Sulla on Clearcut at night, and I have the most PERFECT approach, almost like my FS2004 days, and just as I cut throttle to zero because it looks about time to hit the ground, I smash into that wall-fence enclosing the base. Didn't even see it coming.
