0.1.0? Version numbers? What do they mean?
« on: January 17, 2010, 05:27:48 AM »
I have been getting questions from a few people asking why our latest update is called "0.1.0". I will tell you...

The numbers of 0.1.0 is represented by our way of marking the major and minor updates.

The first digit is represented as the main version number. Since we are not satisfied in calling our game 1.0 and kept with the label of beta (since high number stress testing is required and we thank the community for helping ), we will continue to have this number until we release with all of our promised features (Claw, Air Transports, Mech Lab, New Game modes ect.)

The second number is the major updates. Full of both Content and code updates that help both gameplay and add new features, along with code changes to help stabilize and optimize play experience. Many more of these will come before 1.0

The third is the hot fixes that relate to the updates. If we find a significant problem with the update, we will work on immediate fixes which will most likely be code related to solve the problematic issues for that release. These hotfixes will not modify the gameplay nor the balance of the current update. If there is a new update after a hotfix, this number will be cleared back to "0" as the major update will already have the latest code.

So instead of  "0.1.0", think of it as "Beta.Update 1.No Current Hotfix"

If after nine major updates you aren't ready to call it a full version then something isn't right lol.

Say something like that and you'll be getting less updates.  ;)

It is very likely there will be more than 9 updates, and it will just keep increasing. 0.10.0, 0.11.0, etc.

Just goes to show that the dev team won't call it good until it's ready.   ;)

I think the most confusing thing is that when you look at the "Crysis Version" when connecting to the server, we've gone through the following:

0.2.0 - Initial Beta
0.3.0 - Beta hotfix
0.1.0 - Beta update

I think this sticky means they've finally decided on a numbering system.
On the internet, no one can hear you sarcasm.

Noob question.  What's the best way to keep up with hotfixes and updates?  Is there a "go to" thread?

The lo-fi method is to check these forums for new Sticky threads when you attempt to join servers and are notified that your version of the mod is not consistent with that of the server.

We don't yet have an official channel for notification of updates other than these forums and the front-page of the website.  Generally the updates will disseminate out via various channels like moddb.com and other file host services, as well as torrents.  I will also do my best to keep the latest version of hotfixes available on mwlldownload.com   Future larger file releases (like the original mwll beta distribution) have to happen via torrents and file hosting services that are designed to handle the extraordinary bandwidth requests.  mwlldownload.com crumpled in the first 30 minutes of the original beta release.

I've mentioned this a few times in the IRC channel, but just to reiterate:  If one of the devs wants to contact me prior to a release to get torrent(s) seeded/file(s) uploaded to my mirror to increase the availability, I'm more than happy to help.  I'll be mirroring the files and seeding torrents either way.

Hopefully this isn't the wrong place to ask, but is there a listing, either on the forums or on another page of the site, that goes over the changes from each version/patch?

I have not played since 0.2.0 and I'm curious to see what's changed and what's new with 0.3.2
I want more heavy gauss in my life.

http://www.mwlldownload.com/

On that site, you'll find the changelog that goes all the way back to 0.1.0.
