I will probably get flamed for this.
« on: January 22, 2010, 04:58:06 PM »
I would like longer and wider maps with numerous objectives to defend/hold.One of my favourite maps in Red Orchestra was Berizina.Which was a Russian defend and Germans attack. On which it  meant that the jerries had set objectives to cap and then the battle shifted to the next one back.
But there is an issue with this sort of map in this game.

This game plays like a fast paced FPS with mechs.I think it needs the speed knocking down a bit and the ranges lengthened a lot.If the rate of fire was dropped down slightly and then the ranges stretched out to about double what they are now then it would change the speed and feel of the game totaly. At the moment you just end up with a circle of death with mechs. Now i understand lots are happy with this. But i was hoping for a more"realistic" type of game.

But i think 2 of the better maps are clearcut and marshes. These 2 maps offer what i think is the best combined arms maps going.Because they both offer cover for BA and allow places to hide.Yes clearcut can be a LRM boat fest at times but then there are ways of countering this.Plus LRM's are meant to be a softening up weapon anyway.

But i think if the ranges were double you would get more hiding and tactical game play.Light mechs would have a purpose ( to close the range quickly and scout out the threats) and then the lumbering assault mechs could arrive to finish the job.

Is it possible to bring in another RO idea(i assume it was their idea) of having a set amount of reinforcements per game.So that towards the end you could end up with no reinforcements possible because you had used up your quota but still had  few minutes to last out.I have had many tense moments where we could die and needed to hold a point for 3 mins.It used to count down a % counter as they got used up.Or is this being added as we speak?

You won't get flamed for describing different game styles/maps.  Just realize that this is in the Beta stage and they are rolling out different features at different times to allow for debugging.  I have read in other posts the Devs have plans for more than just Solaris Arena and Test of Strength matches as well as new maps.   ;)

FLAME ON!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL.  sorry. was too tempting.

This is kind of trivial at this point. It pains many people to only be able to play what two game styles.... the rest will come.

i'd certainly agree with more gametypes, but certainly not reducing the speed.  It's about as slow as it should get right now.  I'd actually say make it faster.  You can still have just as much tactical gameplay along side fast gameplay, which ultimately makes for a better game (unless you like RPGs, i can see how you'd want it slower).

problem with bigger maps is the server support sucks.  32p servers lag like none other, and you'd need that many players for larger maps.

+, cant really call your "version" more "realistic"...  to me, the current state of the game is "realistic", so it's just a matter of opinion.  Well, we could go ultra realistic in which the aeros basically rape everything, because that's basically how real wars are.

I agree that the ranges are too compressed.
You are able to close the distance far too quick in this mod as compared to other implementations to MW IMO.

Speeding it up would just be silly.  That's one thing that bugged me about MW 4 vs MW 2.  MW 4 seemed too cartoonish.
Maybe it was due to the 3rd person view though.

I agree that some of our maps should be expanded. Maps like Clearcut are leftover from the currently-in-revamp TOA game-mode. We shrunk the map by alot so you could play SA on it, so you're pretty much playing the center of what was once a much larger map.

I'd think regardless we could have the much bigger version available since I think the unforeseen consequence of shrinking Clearcut led to the overabundance of missile-camping in its current incarnation. I don't think our level designers foresaw the blatant ability to sit in your base and basically fire over the mountain, nor did we see this in our playtests due to the much smaller nature of our tests.

I look forward to us adding newer maps, as well as larger maps in the future.

No mate i do understand its only a beta, and yes i am bored with team death match. But reading some of the later posts in this thread gives me a warm feeling about the size of the maps. But i still feel this is like mechwarrior on steroids. But then i never much played the other game multiplayer before so i may be talking total bollocks. Its just slightly to fast and frantic for me at the mo.

You should try smaller servers maybe then?
I would wait on TOA, i think that is more your play style.
It's more mine too, but its good to get as much practice with all of the different equipment before then.

I agree.  The good news is, seeing as the raw design is still there from the old version of the map, it'll be pretty painless to implement any new larger-scale objective based game modes.

On that note I've been working on building more spots for cover around the map, particuarly around the IS base seeing as it's easier to "missile camp" around that area due to the higher ground and lack of rolling hills the clan side has.

It'll also hopefully be not as easy to just sit on the cliff side for both teams right out side of the spawn and camp, with a few tweaks I'm putting in.

Among many other gameplay improvements :)

If you didn't play MW3 then let me tell you this game is shaping up to be much more tactical and battles much more spread out. Combined with the upcoming mechlab that utilizes a modular weapons approach then it will be infinitely more realistic than MW3, where most of the battles took place in a hotspot on a map with boated mechs (unless using stock mechs). Note that analysis is purely observation, not at all bashing MW3, its still the best game i've ever played.
