Your memorable moments.
« on: January 24, 2010, 04:54:41 PM »
First, thanks for one of the the most fun mods I played in *many* years. In fact, together with Fall from Heaven 2 for Civ 4 I think this might become one of the most professional mods ever done. I can't even begin to comprehend how much hard work has gone into it. Kudos where it's due.

Anyway, I thought I'd start a thread were people could write short but sweet stories about situations in the game that made them go "OMFG!" or just stuff they found neat, be it that time you got sniped out of your Atlas by a 50k mech or BA, or maybe it was you who brought down the Atlas?

I'll start off with one of my own: We were having a great game at Marshes, it had been pretty to and fro, none of the teams really having the upper hand. Most people ran around in brawler mechs or snipers. At the moment I was piloting the pulse laser Awesome, I like it mainly for the fact that it's still pretty good at medium range sniping without having the heat problems the other variants have. The other team were pushing hard towards the base most of us spawned in, and while we brought down a few of them a lot more friendly mechs went down around me. I took down some medium mech, maybe a Shadowcat but was under fire from all directions and started getting pretty badly damaged. Suddenly I discovered I was utterly alone, every blue dot on the radar had disappeared and some had started spawning at the second base, I counted at least 4 red dots within a 400m radius. With the damage display showing only dark reds, reds and orange I thought I was done for for sure. Since I wasn't under fire at just that instance I quickly went passive and went over the nearest island, towards our mech bay, some 200 meters away. Maybe, maybe I could buy some breathing room. No such luck, suddenly I saw a red dot closing in on the passive radar (which is what, 200m or something?) and just an instant later, a second red dot. "fappfappfapp" I muttered under my breath, every step anticipating a killing salvo in my back torso.

Slowly, slowly I was getting closer to the hangar, the red dots were closing in faster though. But, as a miracle, I entered mech bay 2 without getting shot even once, maybe they were playing with me, waiting till I stood there as a sitting duck, I don't know. Red dots even closer now, I turned so I faced the exit of the bay and shut down my mech anyway, maybe I could fool them, or at least get enough repairs done to survive long enough to kill them. Just a few seconds later though, a Madcat rounded the corner and entered the bay, all those weapons pointing straight at my wounded mech. A split second later another one came at the hangar from an angle so it had line of sight at me. Very little repairs done and severely outgunned I powered up as I received two salvos from both mechs, SRMs and god knows what else. "Imdeadimdeadimdead" I thought, but no. The mech came online, showing blacks and reds, but all the lasers were still operational! I aimed at the cockpit of the closest cat and held down the trigger, no luck. The mech still stood there, pilot still in, still weapons at me. I knew I might have a second chance, pulse lasers have faster recycle times than most other weapons. Tenths of seconds went by, feeling like minutes, adding up to seconds, 3 mechs frozen, locked at each other, waiting for weapons to recycle. It all happened very fast, the second Madcat fired its salvo at me, my lasers recycled and I shot at the cockpit of the first one. I died... Mech exploding. Blue pulses from my lasers striking the cockpit of my closest enemy as I went down in flames. And, he died as I did. Regardless to say, even if I died I saw it as a small victory. :D

So, anyone else with stories to share?

Too lazy to write a whole story right now.
Maybe later.

But hitting a jumping BA 400m away midair with my Gauss was pretty funny :).

Early in the game on the swamp map. After an extended engagement of hit and run around the islands with a Partisan Prime and some of the opposing missle spammers i decided to make a run back to the hangar for repairs. Ran in, positioned in the bay, hit p, waited...nothing wtf...start up, reposition, shut down. Dang....not working. Bad feeling......check map...yup you guessed it....in the wrong hangar...... again. Mechs closing in...boom. heh good times =)

Some days after the release of the beta, somewhere near the end of a 90 minute game, there were 3 little BA running around on Sandblasted, firing long range shots at enemy mechs, supporting their teammates fighting in the centre by keeping enemy BA away from them and generally having a good time.
Suddenly a big bad MadCat C came in and ruined their day by forcing them to run away.
The 3 little BA decided to take a little detour to avoid the MadCat and to attack the enemys rear. Behind the pyramid they were surprised to find 2 Atlas walking slowly (and passive) towards their own teams back. After reporting that to their team they thought that it might be best to go down in glory and tried to delay the big mechs.
About 2 or 3 minutes later the mechs were down in flames and the 2 remaining little BA were kinda in awe of what they had just done  ;D

On Sandblasted, the enemy team had a line of tanks and mechs on a ridge, LRMing anything that moved. I decided to try to get close with a LBX Madcat. Myself and another Madcat (one with PPCs) started towards the enemy, and the friendly Madcat hid behind a pillar as missiles streaked towards him. Not wanting to be a sitting duck, I hid there with him until he went out to return fire. Once he did, I snuck towards the enemy as the other Madcat distracted the other team. I crested over the ridge and the other team panicked. A few pilots got out of their vehicles and tried to take me as BA. I was able to destroy a few manned vehicles before my mech was in the critical.

I ejected, with the former pilots of the LRM boats still harassing me as BA. I made a dash towards one of those Egyptian village areas and hid in a house where I could recover my health. One of the BAs walked up to the door and shot inwards, nearly killing me, but my return fire was enough to drive him away. For the next 5 minutes, it was a game of BA hide and seek in the village, myself versus 2 enemy BA. We jetting around and hid in buildings, never managing to seriously damage each other. One BA pilot finally got aggravated and gave up, so now it was just myself and another BA fighting it out. We went on for another 5+ minutes. At one point, I hid on the second floor of one of those small pyramid buildings, the enemy BA waiting outside, neither of us daring to move for a solid minute, until I jetted outside and the battle began again.

The entire time that this was happening, the remaining enemy missile boats were still fighting my team. Finally, our team was able to break through and crest the hill, scattering the enemy. As I was dueling the other BA, another friendly BA joined me and ended up killing the other guy I was dueling. An anti-climactic ending to the most epic duel I've had in this game. From there, I joined the assault on the enemies until I got killed one way or another.

Yesterday I jumped on top of a friendly Vulture while in a Scat and we went megazord on the enemy's asses.

Fun times.

On sandblasted I was in a Demolisher on the Clan side on the ridge supporting some friendlies in fending off a lance of mechs assaulting our position with my dual gauss rifles. After breaking the attack there was only one mech left, a beat stick, which got a little too close for comfort. I tried to retreat but ended up stuck on the left side of the ridge in a cluster of rocks while trying to shoot behind my while making my escape. My team mates quickly killed the MKII however every single one of the pilots had bailed and were now swarming my tank. I was in a predicament because the angle I was stuck in resulted in my turret looking straight at the ground in one direction and up in the air in the other direction. However being the stubborn player I am, I stuck it out and one by one picked all four of them out of the sky with the gausses mid jump (because of the angle), and at a range of under 25m in a couple of minutes. I still had to abandon the tank though, still couldn't move :(

Marshes last night on some server i haven't played on.  My team was getting slaughtered and I was having an off night, kept hitting trees then getting blown up as I tried to maneuver out.

The enemy was nice enough to not go up and base rape so it gave me time to figure out what I could do.  Normally at end game I'm around the 70-80k CBill range, but this being an off night was only around the 50k mark.  So I decided to go with the biggest weapons i could mount and picked a Demolisher Prime (2 AC20s)

At this point the enemy were all packing heavies to assaults + they had solid artillery support from LRMs and A4s.  Only thing I could hope for was to go passive, close the gap as fast as possible, and hope that the artillery wouldn't rip me apart before i got into my 350m range.

So i'm out on my run trying to end around to get the softer missile boats in back, but it was not to be.  What I didn't count on was that they had points of 2-3 BA running as spotters.  My damage indicators light up like a xmas day parade as the lrms rain down.  I slam on my afterburner trying to get to the near by buildings for cover.  At this point i'm running armor at 80%, not ideal but it could have been much worse... Turns out that worse was just about to pounce.

The BAs smelt wounded prey and swarmed me SRM, PPC, C8, and Laser fire erupts from all directions.  I target the closest one but they're all hopping around like fleas never standing still.  I some how manage to take one out, with double blast from my AC20s.  In a small part of my mind I think how ridiculous it was to waste AC ammo on freaking flies.  The rest of my mind was firmly focus on the fact that they had me cornered near a building wall and my armor was sinking rather quickly towards 60%.

I make a fast break and get around the building and out run them on the flats of the space port... RIGHT into a Vulture packing 2 GRs.  He doesn't see me right off the bat as he's finishing off one of my unfortunate teammates.  I'm thinking take off the arms, pulled the trigger and the shell are away.  But, as my luck had been crap, the Vulture turns right as the shells land to take them square in the center torso.  To add to that his buddy in an Atlas crests a near by hill and I know my death is only seconds away.

At thing point I'm, hell if i'm going down I've got to take the Vulture with me.  So I bum rush the Vulture blasting away at the center torso, all the while taking fire from both mech.  At the last moment, I hit a small hill and go air born straight towards the  Atlas.  In the air I land the final shot that takes down the Vulture while the Atlas unloads causing my tank to explode mid air.  As it the death camera triggers, the Vulture goes critical and in a orgy of explosions my game crashes to desktop :o

Well one of my favorite tactics as BA is to land on my target where I can screw him up with impunity unless he gets a friend to shoot me off. That leads up to an amusing story in which I was actually the victim. I was in a Puma (what I now like to refer to as a landing platform with legs) when an enemy BA had the audacity to land on my head. Unable to get him off, I hopped out and duelled it out with him, until he jumped inside my Puma and attacked me with it! So, I landed on HIS head and gave him what's for. So, he then ejects and after some more jetpack battles, I land on my Puma, get back in, and get ready to fry this insolent lil bugger once and for all! Oh crap...he's on my head again. I hop out, but he finally kills me when I zigged in my jetpack when I should have zagged.

Sandblasted map. Out-tonned, outmaneuvered, my team was pushed back to the ridge next to our base while assault mechs were picketing outside. We're still wearing them down, holding the line while they're drilling each of our heavy mechs, one after the other. The battlefield flows into a canyon a few hundred meters away from our entrance, and it's held by an Atlas that's marching right to our front door. Corpses of our mechs are thrown onto the dune all around him, and the sun is shining over the furthest pyramid, at the back of the Atlas that's shining like Ares himself. I get into a Scat B, go passive, and flank along the rock wall. The enemy team doesn't see me, they're hammering our artillery for the easy kills.

I leap over the wall. He's facing away. I aim in between his shoulders. Pulses, the LBX. Back armor down to orange.

He turns, trying to track me. I don't know his loadout but my leg's lost 3/4ths of its armor to a couple of his weapons. I land, I circle, he's too slow. I've got his back again.

Full bore. Dark orange.

My missile warning goes off. I can see the plume from at least three launchers out there. The Atlas hits reverse to turn faster. I reverse my circling and get in close. He blasts me. Side torso's gone, but all weapons stay online.

The missiles come in, and I'm at his feet. He's covered in their blossom.

Dark orange to black.

I throttle up, leap again. He misses his alpha strike. I go over him, turning and twisting. I have his back again.

Pulse. LBX. Pulse. Pulse.

Bam.

i chased down a puma yesterday in clearcut after flying around for about 20 minutes and scratching it with my laser and srms. the final srm got him, as he was returning to base through the main door :D

also i love everytime players in the other team get so annoyed by my continuous narc/tbolt attacks with sulla b, they swear im going to pay for it. it makes killing them after that MUCH more fun :)
