What do you want your HuD to look like?
« on: January 26, 2010, 01:15:34 AM »
Go at it people. Where do you want the heat gauge? Bigger? Completely different colors? Do you want a bigger lock on targeting box on enemy mechs? Smaller ones for Vehicles? Do you hate Jesus? Would you put the Radar on the far left side of the map or in the upper right hand corner (like a mini-map of sorts in other games)?

Just list your personal preferences, like I'm going to. I will edit this post as more ideas come in to include a list of what people have mentioned.

I want a digital fuzzy dice display.

But seriously, I like the current set up. Once everything is fully functional (looking at you JJ % display) then I would be perfectly happy with it. the only thing I can think of at the moment is moving the hostile damage display a tad so it is not covered up by the in game chat.

Things *I* have a problem with

That heat bar is so tiny, only the warning that i'm overheating tells me that i am in fact, overheating. I want it big, sideways, and in the lower center part of the screen.

Color coded weapon groups/TYPES. Out of the corner of my eye i want to be able to tell that my missiles are still reloading but my Gauss Rifle is once again ready to rock. I want to be able to see that without looking at it. Also, increase the Size of the weapon text, OR even better yet allow me to toggle weather or not i want to see the list of the name or just an Icon of the weapon itself. An icon of a long blue/red/yellow tube is different beam weapons, while a long rack with holes in it is an LRM. Regardless of what weapon group i may have it in.

Radar, I want to move it. Me personally i want it in the upper left hand corner where all the other games put their mini-maps, and in the upper right i'll put the radar screen. I'd like a sweet toggle that will expand it in the middle of the screen but still very opaque that will switch between the two or even combine the two of them at the same time at the touch of a button.

Let me dim the background cockpit screens lights. I can do that in my car, after all.

Give us Unique mech dolls to represent our targets. I'm a huge fan and i of course love the generic mech doll too but when i'm targeting something over a hill I want to be able to see what i'm firing at without looking at it. I have a real grudge taking my eyes off the battlefield to look at something my hud should be offering on a silver platter while saying "yes sir, may i have another."

Modes: I dislike having them hug the radar screen. I'd put it under the weapon's screen, not next to the radar screen. Yes this is more then likely a personal preference.

And alot of this cosmetic hud stuff? Don't make us change this in battle, give it to us in an option's menu.

Besides embroider hello kitty products inside the cockpit, perhaps a larger lock on hit box for the VTOL's and Aero's. Also maybe a better Eject warning system, right now if I hit eject I see some red text flash and have no idea what it's saying, also maybe give eject warning when your mech hits a critical damage state?

My preferences:

I like:
Current locations for radar and map
Current heat and JJ indicators

I'd like to change:
Reticle flash on successful hit
Reticle indication when currently selected weapon is loaded.  (Eg. it could turn green or blink or something.)
A tiny 'analog clock wait timer' around the outside of the reticle counting down the time to reload
Different radar symbols for BA vs Tanks vs VTOL vs Aerospace vs Mechs etc
Different radar colour for unpiloted Mech
Adjustable zoom level for the radar
Readout of current zoom level and radar type (eg Passive x 2) on the radar
Colour coding of weapon groups
Custom outlines of enemy tanks/mechs instead of the generic one
A picture of tank armour rather than just the percentages
If the right display could be a MFD of some sort with external cameras that might be helpful
Zoom only zooms in a central square within your HUD, not the whole window

Further ideas:

Some kind of tiny indication of my current rank would be nice.
Inbound missiles showing on the radar (this would be consistent with the fact that there's a missile indicator).

i want the enemy mech distance to target to be bigger. I can barely read it. Also , I would like the home base to show up clearly on radar.
what is the difference between the two radars btw?

what is the difference between the two radars btw?

You mean passive/active? Active is the standard, you see anything inside 1000m and they see you. Passive decreases both how far your radar can pick things up and how close you are picked up. Of course this is not taking into account all of the electronics that can be thrown in, battle armor, shut down mechs, etc.

...current... radar type

Don't they already have this stuff? ???

Color coded weapon groups. Out of the corner of my eye i want to be able to tell that my missiles are still reloading but my Gauss Rifle is once again ready to rock. I want to be able to see that without looking at it.

And this?

No they are not color coded, but around the reticule it shows which weapon groups are loaded and in range of what you are looking at.

unless im mistaken no....the 6 groups around the reticul show weapon is in range ,, not if the weapon is ready to fire again.

correct me if im wrong , but yes...i often have to throw a wasted glance  to the top right corner of my monitor to seee if my CUAC20 is ready  , if a weapons group is destroyed..the HUD reticul shouls show red to show that the weapons groups is gone or out of ammo ..would be handy.

What I'd like for the cockpit isn't visual but audible. More Betty! She only speaks when I change between chain and group fire right now.

I don't want it that way. I would rather that they be color coded not according to weapon group (1,2,3,4) but by weapon Type (Pulse, Gauss, LRM). Sorry if i was unclear on that. Plus, this is about things the way you want them, not about the way things are. We're not talking about stuff that's necessarily missing, but about features being done the way we would like to have them implicated. If that involves adding stuff that's not there now or just moving stuff that is there already.

Virt just gave me an idea. We have a Passive radar that lowers our ability to detect. And we have The active probe to increase the detection range of the radar. Why can't we have a toggle that allows a longer radar range period without increased ranges against passive radar? One that detects active radar units but marks you down as a huge blip on every enemy radar.

Implicated a different way you could have a second mode for active probe users, one that sacrifices the detection range against stealth but allows for greater ranges all together against active users? Could this be directional, only a great range in frount of your mech, but still allows sneaks to get behind you?

Oh and pure cosmetic, but can we have the radar have that little line that goes around 360 degrees?

Id like an open source HUD editor so people could download and change theirs as to how they like it. I can do that with alot of games already.

But yes, too small of displays, id to see the git ol "ATLAS" above the enemy armor display so i know what im getting into right away, and bigger distance marker that maybe hovers over the targets box too? idk, id have to see that one to know if it works or not...

On screen warnings that do a few flashes if you are about to loose your chest or something, or warn me that i just lost all my weapon pods so i know to eject ASAP.
