Yes, you're right, the 'new' areas are most often built like chess. But old city centers (with new skyskrapers build in the last years) stay 'analog'. But I depends quite sure of the country and the landscape. I always think more of the medieval founded cities -> my opinion is really subjectiv.  ;)

That would hold true for Earth, sure.  However, wouldn't it be presumed that after thousands of years of metropolitan planning that new cities would be developed with a growth structure in mind?  We see that in newer developments today, and BT is obviously set in the future on newly colonized planets...

I'm all for randomness in city designs, but realistically speaking, cities of the future would probably be more ordered than even new cities today.  Cities that began as interstellar colonies would probably also see a lot of reuse of architectural design.

@Blhurr:
(...)
Your forgot to insert always a 'U.S.' (= cities located in the United States) in front of the (word) cities.
(...)

 ;D ::) ;D

Cities are generally built on flat ground but they don't have to be, especially in the future where engineers have devised all kinds of means of building on oddly angled surfaces.
(...)
Depends. In flat regions in the past centuries cities where often founded on hills because of the better defensive abilities.
(Just watch pics of old cities in Italy, most of them founded on hills with a castle/fortress on top of it/the center of the city)
Or they had been founded in river deltas for the water supply. (nearly all of todays major cities)
And it always depends on the landscape of the country and for sure the historical background.
-> in countries like Switzerland they had been founded in valleys (made by a river).

This may again be a US thing, but It has been my experience that cities are generally built in a valley, where they have a close proximity to water.  I run a wireless ISP, so topography is something I have to pay close attention to.  Almost all of my tower locations are on high-points surrounding the valleys cities are built in.  I guess defensive location has been less a consideration for cities in the US.

Anyway, I stop now argueing around to days cities.

I'm just afraid that any eventually upcoming city map will be too much inspired by (sorry) a chess board layout.

Salvatoris. You got a pm.  ;)

Take a top down view of Phoenix, Arizona and you'll see a city that's almost perfectly layed out on a grid.  As mapping became more of a science than an art, city planning became very grid like.  Now it's trending back to art again.
yeah this it is praticaly a grid...hmm  but flagstaff...hmmm http://www.bing.com/maps/default.aspx?q=mpas&mkt=en-US&FORM=BYFD#JnE9eXAuZmxhZ3N0YWZmJTdlc3N0LjAlN2VwZy4xJmJiPTE0LjIzNTcxODkyNjEzJTdlLTEzLjg3MzE0NDA5MDE3NTYlN2UxNC4xMzA4Njg5Mjc5MTk3JTdlLTE0LjA2MDI1NDk5MTA1NDU= A nice blend of grid and some other angles. But be warned this is a smaller town >_>
Nice work salv you have me drooling over your map.

Here's a map of my home town.  Almost every intersections 90%.  Streets on the grid are evenly spaced and numbered !st street all the way out to 68th or so in each direction.. it's not a huge town.  Streets for a long stretch in the non-numbered directions are the presidents in order.

You can see the larger demarcations as well that grid out into the rural areas.  I think they are 16 miles on a side?

That's how people build where it's perfectly flat, treeless and without a lake or river.  Still not sure WHY people would build in such a locale, but there it is.  If it weren't for the two interstate highways crossing at odd angles, I bet the whole grid would be oriented with streets running straight North/South and East/West.

Oh shit... a perfect city!

Well, in europe if you'd have a city placed on flat ground with a north-south river you would find it's streets to be real maze, with somewhat center square market near the river (surrounded by moat), and than everything spreading from center in random directions. Quarter with organized streets plan happen, but not very often, even if given quarter is build in 20th-21st century. It's more like few houses / blocks of flats with organized streets, than entire quarters. (Though exceptions happen obviously)

So it ain't that simple... it all depends on culture, time when city was build, terrain, and god knows what else.

Phoenix

That's phoenix from the top down.  Almost everything runs N-S, E-W. Notice the scale too.  It's HUGE. I can't remember the map, grid, and projection system that was used but it was developed to settle the western half of the U.S. and phoenix is a very young city in a very flat and open part of the country and was developed almost entirely on that grid system.

Just a little update on this user map my son and I are working on.  We will be looking for a small group of testers for the map within the next few weeks.  We would like to find two active units for early testing so we can load-test in somewhat organized play.  The map is fairly large, and I'll plan on updating about twice a month as I optimize and fine tune.  If any of you are in a unit that would like to help test, especially if you can provide a host.  Just shoot me a PM and I'll let you know when I have a beta release ready.

holy crap, friggin awesome map!
People are stupid if they think they can have their own way.

... that is, unless they have HEAP rounds, high-explosive homing missiles, and terawatt lasers on a walking weapons platform, that is...
