Star Trek Online
« on: February 11, 2010, 05:01:31 PM »
Call me a nerd or a geek or Trekfag or whatever, I've got to say that STO was actually a pleasant surprise.

I was kind of expecting it to be pretty sub-par and mediocre at best, but I was persuaded by several friends to get it (and get the preorder too) and I've been playing since release. Just two levels off getting my Exploration Cruiser ;D

The game is... interesting. Space combat (especially PvP) is varied, ground battles even more so surprisingly enough, and the way XP is gained is a good one. 'Grinding' is pretty much unnecessary -

Missions, though they last for -ages-, give big chunks of XP and can be continued from midway through if you need to leave for whatever reason. PvP is organised in a system similair to the "Battlegrounds" of WoW, and whats more it grants XP - the better you do, the more you gain. Even moreso, once you reach level 6 you unlock the Klingon Empire as a playable side (there are about a half-dozen playable races within the Empire) who progress almost exclusively via PvP.

Other than that the game, while not as highly polished as the long-running games like WoW, has a lot of potential - and I at least am finding it good fun ;D

hmm interesting, I was thinking about picking up the game but i've been burned by MMO's in the past that didn't live up to the hype (Age of Conan :( )

Would you say you have to play with friends to make it fun?

Probably, yeah. I've been playing with a friend of mine (Him in an Escort me in a Cruiser) and it's went by alot faster (and been alot more fun) than alone.

One problem I recently noticed though... I'm two levels off cap and this is the third week of release - and it's not even like I play it constantly, I have a job and all >_>

Endgame content seems mildly interesting, but I fear this may be a "One month only" kinda MMO xD I heard of players reaching level cap by the end of the three-day headstart.

im willing to bet that STO is going to end up like Borderlands:

Big hype, but it dies down after the release, no new content that can be accessed easily, takes too short a time to reach max level.

As I am quite a trekkie myself, I was interested in STO. But I heared, that space combat there is actually arcade starfleet command-style 2D. Is that true? I was hoping it would be more like it was in bridge commander or (a false hope of course) klingon academy.

BTW, is there a free trial available? It was nice to see that EVE is as boring as it was described without buying a DVD or paying for subscription. ;D

Space combat is in a 3D area, but due to the limitations on the engine your manueverability is limited... you can't pull a loop, for example. A rotates (yaws) your ship left, D rotates it right, S pulls the nose up and W pushes it down. You can obviously rotate freely, but you can only pitch down (or up) about 60 degrees.

Other than that, space combat is pretty good - Multiple weapon types with different firing arcs, different types of types... (You can have, for example... a Phaser Beam Array, or a Dual Disruptor array, or a Polaron Dual Heavy Cannon, or an Antiproton turret... etc etc etc) ... as well as lots of different abilities that you and your bridge officers get. In some ways its fairly simple - /all/ weapons have a range of exactly 10 kilometres for example - but overall the combat - especially PvP - is fairly good :)

I've been watching STO for a while. It doesn't look too bad, though, like most MMO's I'm going to give it 3-4 months to see if it retains it's playerbase (I'm looking at you "end game content") and to see the extent of support / new features the Devs are giving it.

Mind you, I recently picked up EVE Online, so it might be 3-4 months before I give STO a shot...

My fiance' was super hyped on this one, but the action oriented gameplay and lack of diplomacy options kinda bummed her out. I'm not a ST fan, but I have to say it was a good bonding moment, she was like "it's based on the 2009 movie..." and I was like "Hun sit down, I'm going to tell you a story... about a little thing called 'Dark Age'".

I played some last night and got to say their tutorial system is crap. Good mmo's make you addicted and want to play more, after about an hour i got frustrated and quit.  My buddy is still wanting to try it out so I went to their wiki site and read their guides.

Suggest starting there instead of playing the game first.

I'm sure the same could be said of us for MWO, MWLL, MW4, etc... oh well, I'd rather be a battletech nerd than a star trek nerd anyday :P
