Less and less players every day?
« on: February 15, 2010, 05:31:14 AM »
Hi!

Is it just me or are there fewer players for this mod every day?

Maybe it's because I'm from germany and thus my playtime differs with American gamers, but every time I boot up MWLL (which is quite often), there are only 3-4 servers populated at all. Approximately 30 players or so, that's all.

Hopefully the mod can increase it's playerbase in the future. I would be very unhappy if the flame of this brilliant piece of software-fun would die out before it really could catch fire with gamers worldwide.

Your opinions...?

IMHO the mod is getting old. people are getting tired of playing on the same old laggy assed server running laggy assed maps over and over again.  We need some fixes and some new maps ASAP or this thing is going to dry up.

I imagine the playerbase will yo-yo until its released as a stable 1.0.0. School/University starting, people going back to work won't be helping the mod either, and a lot of new games are coming out at the moment.

One bad thing was the long time when the forum was off due to the server/software change. Excactly at these days a big magazine had an article about MWLL puplished -> unlucky timing. (german PC Games) Great chance lost to attract many players.  :'(

And everybody is waiting for the next update and we get no informations about when it will be released (+/- 1 week would be nice).

And the thing with vacations: MWLL started at the x-mas vacation, no wonder why the server had been crowded for weeks.

BTW: This is no assault at the devs! Just what I think what could have caused the momentarily situation.

Ok, it is fun to meet always the same players on the servers. But it worries me a bit.

And I really wonder why nearly no server is running in Test of Strength-mode. Just had one game with it (30min server, 150k at start), one of the best games I ever had. (but it must be adjusted. later joining players start with full 150k -> map is running 30min. Every minute you join to late 5k less for example)

And I REALLY agree with Salvatoris, some of the fan-made maps are really great and it would be nice to have a server cycling only these maps.

But I'm optimistic: The next update will occure soon and it will really rock!

Hey guys,

well i am the Serveradministrator of the Mechwars by assets-incorporated.de servers. And i must tell you, that its true that there are fewer players on the servers than whilst the first hype. I contacted Criminal already because of this and told him, that it is really time to get some different game modes. I think it is the lack of gamemodes, why players arent playing so often anymore. But i really hope, that all of you dont give up and stick with the mod. As said before, it is only a beta and good things need time. I think and hope, that with the next update, there will be another hype again. And the more variety gets into the game, there will be more players.

Cheers

For me, I have to say the lack of game modes is what seems to be missing the most - there just isn't any real competitive edge to the games, because no score is being kept, and there are no real objectives to achieve.

TDM and DM works fine in fast paced shooters, but suffers in a more 'simmy' environment.

Again, all good things come to those that wait - I guess we're all a little too impatient!  ;D

Our gold server is running ToS and is set for 24 players.  If you want to see a server fill up, grab a buddy and mess around on it for half an hour.  People don't like joining empty servers.

the scoring is a weird issue. Also , theres for me a steady stream of 40-70 online at any given time. A few good fixes and it would be 200, and that is MORE than enough.. Its actually enough now, but just barely.

More servers need to run user maps... that's the problem. :P

If people keep making them ill keep on helping to host them   8)

Yes we do need more gamestyles but  i'll be patient and wait for the next update to see what has been done/fixed/improved/added.. etc.

The ToS gamestyle i personally like. It just unfortunate that alot of people only know how to play Solaris and then they get into TOS, they buy the biggest mech they can.. get a couple kills, wonders about not getting extra cbills, go to  repair (if they make it that far) find out how much it just cost to repair.. go out and die, then leave the server.. then you get a unbalanced server, people complain about stacking.. and it just goes on. I find that running 60 min solaris and 30 min ToS kinda helps but I personally would like to run 60 minute or longer rounds on the big maps- but i try to take the opinions of others and try to find a nuetral or time/map cycle that people will agree on

Pretty much all that can be said has been. I wouldn't doubt to see a flux of people for a couple weeks after each new patch, at least until full release. If the player base is dead after full release then clearly there is a lesson that can be learned, which would be NEVER release a Beta for a Mod to the entire community, because the community is full of people that have no understanding of what Beta means, and a Mod team can't move from early Beta stage to Release fast enough to keep the small community together.

Also, there was a comment about ToS and people coming in towards the end with full c-bills, and that is purely wrong. Your starting funds slowly dwindle as the match goes on to keep the starting funds for new players reasonably close to what active players should have.

I am more concerned the learning curve drives away new players. If you've never played this game before, you step out of your base and immediately get hit by a wall of LRMs shot from over the hill, thats pretty disheartening and Im sure people quit shortly thereafter.

I think it would be a good idea for the community to step up and create some video tutorials that are linked on the main site right next to the download page. some kind of "While you are waiting to download these mod. Why don't you watch this tutorial video" thing. I for one would be glad to help any way I can.
