More appropriate game modes
« on: February 16, 2010, 09:01:25 PM »
I've been having quite a bit of fun shooting stuff up and practicing, but the current Solaris Arena gamemode leaves me feeling like it's just practice for the real game.  My point and/or question is:  Solaris Arena isn't what the devs envisioned as a mech game, is it?  When I think of Mech games, I don't think about respawning repeatedly, I don't think about unlimited assets, or endlessly killing the same people for points/cbills.  When I imagine a mech combat game, I envision missions, objectives, scraping by with a mech missing an arm because you can't just die and get another, etc.

So in short, I'm interested in what other game modes are currently under development or being planned.  I've found ideas posted on the forums, but not anything official/specific.

Things I'd like to see in game modes:
- Limited resources (Similar to TOS)
- Objectives to destroy/occupy
- Control point battles perhaps

Many of the things I have in mind don't really fit well into a public server with random people coming and going, but one of the great things I imagine this game will host is league/organized matches.  These would be painfully dull to do in Solaris Arena mode, IMO.

More game modes are in the works, cannot comment further.  SA is the tip of the iceberg.

Is there any way that someone would be able to assist with the other game modes? I have quite a bit of multi-player design experience and would be more than happy to throw my experience your team's way.

I played on a server that was alternating regular SA and Trial of Strength modes.  TOS is basically the same as regular SA but you start with something like 150K credits, which are all you have to use for the whole round.  It's interesting, definitely not my favorite mode, but it does put more emphasis on careful husbanding of resources, lighter mechs, and energy weaponry.

the only issue I can see with this is that BA with PCC do alright against light mechs and vechicles and 3k is a very cheap option , in a game mode like this I think all the BA weapon options would need to be more expensive to discorage cheap use of BA's. don't get me wrong I like the fact I can take out vech and mechs in BA but in a resource limited map 3k for a viable unit is too cheap for what it can do.

Yes, by applying to http://www.mechlivinglegends.net/forum/index.php/board,10.0.html with sufficient C++/LUA expertise. Please understand that we're not lacking ideas, we're lacking manpower to bring all of those ideas to life in time.
