Crytek Engine Mechanical Animation
« on: September 22, 2007, 01:28:59 AM »
Question that popped into my head:

For vehicles like the Aerotech...is it possible to transform from one mode to another? Of all the amazing features this engine has the capabilities for it should be possible to actually transform a mesh through an animation sequence and assign controls for the different mode.

I'd assume you'd need the same amount of peices, relocated to different positions via animation. I don't know enough about rigging to imagine the horrific complexity of that endeavor. I'm learning Animation now, for Maya, and what goes into a proper rig is nuts.

Wouldn't that be an awesome addition?
I wonder if it's possible.

Yeah i totally agree with you that rigging is like UVmapping one of those unsung hero's that make all the really interesting stuff possible.

The thing with the battletech "aerotech" stuff it isn't so much transformers as you would think. The Robotech stuff has ruined everyones views....it's a cool idea don't get me wrong but the aircraft that we are using are a little more conventional.

Good, I never liked the Robotech stuff that much myself either.
It was too AnimeGundamIsh. The cold, rigid confines of Battletech are more my style, but I was more pondering as to whether it was more possible, than applicable.

Defender,

Your refering to what is called 'LAMS' Land to Air mechs. I know there were a few used in the novels, but it was a old, lost star league technology. I want to say it was on the Smoke Jaguar homeworld? I will double check, you have my interest running.

But like Criminal said, that was like robotech. The LAMS faced a number of technical difficulties with changing over and so forth. Also when a system was taking out it forced you to either stay in the mech mod or aero mod. I also think the LAMS sacrificed armor and weapon systems as well..

Yeah honestly we're trying to stay as far away from the robotech nonsense *ducks* as much as possible.

It'd be cool to have an objective based mission which is a scramble to secure such a relic of the Star League.

I think the existence of LAMs was retconned by the Btech people after some lawsuits.

Nope, their still canon.  The devs just had the Nova Cats slag the last LAM factory from orbit with navel weapons.
