EHHHHH LONG TOMS?
« on: February 26, 2010, 04:18:56 AM »
Rounded up about 300k Cbills in like 3 min on Marshes just now its cool but hmm, its pretty easy to 1shot mechs with that thing even mechs running at full speed, not sure how it will play along but we will see i guess:)

and the Osiris UAC20 fights the first 5 min of each match is fun :) Myabe make us juuust short of that Osiris model in terms of the amount of starting  Cbill

Other than that Great Patch i must say

I took out Long Toms a few times, fortunately they tend to stay active and if you're in a light mech you can easily flank it and kill it pretty quick for a good boost in XP/cash :)

But yeah I took Long Tom myself a few times and could take stuff out like crazy on Marshes

the pricing/leveling amounts have been changed, but I'd place it somewhere around where you'd previously had gotten a Vulture/Madcat perhaps

They are 82,000 credits if I recall.

Yes, there the new Firebomb... I expect alot of complaining later but they are fun.

Not liking the aerospace fixes, the flying feels really off to me now where as I could fly great with a mouse before I was crashing more then ever... And I gave up on firebombing.

By the time you can afford a long tom you can afford most high level mechs as well.  Not to mention it's useless within 300m, defenseless against multiple targets engaging it, has very weak armor and mobility. Sure it's weapon is powerful but it's easy to counter it.

There's some changes/fixes to be made in the future about the unit, but I don't have to much of a problem engaging them unless I'm in an atlas or something and he's 800m+ out.

Hmm we could use more feedback on this. The controls should allow for similar/higher mobility than before, with extra precision for small mouse movements. If you aren't getting this then please test the following for me in a normal server with a Sulla.

1) Time to do a 360 barrel roll.

2) Time to pull up out of a straight 90 degree nosedive

3) Time to do a full 360 front loop (end over tail).

Also the bomb sight is unreliable at best right now. I'll be looking into that.

I've noticed the bombing site problems as well. Sometimes it comes up short and sometime it goes long. Side to side seem alright from my testing....

As for the Long Tom It's amazingly powerful. I pegged an awesome that appeared undamaged in the center torso at 500m and it died instantly. Not sure if maybe that's a bit too powerful. I'd like to see it do a bit less on a direct hit but have a bit more radius with it's splash. Would also be sweet if a dot would appear on the map showing the estimated hit location. Not sure if it's something that fixable, but the trajectory estimate does not seem to include colliding decorations like rocks, makes it hard to use the long tom on inferno where decor rocks seem common.

Now on the flip side, the Long Tom is quite expensive, the ammo is expensive (prohibiting random fire), it handles like a brick, it's large and easy to spot from the air while passive, and has pretty paper like armor.

Long Tom targeting against mechs is proving difficult for me, mainy because while against enemy vehicles, the range to target is large and obvious, the range that shows up on enemy mechs is itty bitty, and appears in the same location as people type, so I'm literally putting my nose up to the monitor to see the range...and of course it's changed by the timeI line it up as the target is often on the move.

How might I increase the size of that text? It was always smaller than the vehicle text, but it seems smaller still than it was prior to the most recent patch.

Long toms are overpowered on maps that are flat like Sand blasted and Marshes. I think they should do less damage because the first time I pick up that bad guy I was able to own a couple of guy.

Long toms hit like a train, but as I've found out, they'll die to 3 or 4 volleys from the Hawkmoth A. Which is much less then just about anything other then a harasser. Once the bombing sights get fixed, they'll be easy pray for passive aeros.

As for marshes, you'll just have to make hit and run GECM light mech teams. Just swing by and unload on them and you can usually run right by without taking too much damage from the close range stuff that tends to hang around.

Good.   Sounds nice and realistic, reflecting the impact of real world wind conditions, imperfections in the bomb's ballistic container, etc, ;)

something i found out the hard way, thanatos make for the perfect target for long toms so if you're in one go passive cause your slow moving machine of death will quickly become scrap with a long tom strike. On the other side, getting to a long tom with a light/med mech is priceless because you just tear them to shreds. Also i can see long toms becoming the all-time favorite targets of vtols
