Weather effects?
« on: April 15, 2010, 03:01:30 AM »
Will we see weather effects in the final?
Would be nice to see wind affect some weapons and air.
Just a thought....

I don't know if the engine has the capacity to alter trajectories of ballistics for something like that, but seems like it would be fun in moderate effect.
Accounting for windage could make for some interesting mechanics, esp. on Sandblasted, with the wind having more effect on the trajectory over range.

But would that make everything just too hard to hit with ballistics and make them useless at long range?
I would vote against wind effecting weapons if that was the case.

I was playing L4D2 last night, and the weather effects in that game are placed there to change your visibility and situational awareness.
I think that using this in MWLL would be fun, possibly tying it into the day/night cycles that maps already use.
Like a coastal map that is foggy and rainy for a while in the "morning", clears up for a bit, rains in the "afternoon", etc..

Some maps have touched on this aspect in having a persistent weather effect, but is there some way to make it dynamic?

if the l4d2 heavy rain effect can be added in periodically during a round , that'd be the awesomest shit ever.

Yeah, totally. Sandstorms for Sandblasted and blizzards for Frostbite would be great too.

in the map Glacier, the maker of that map created some of the snow effects with area triggers..

might be a good question for one of the mappers

I'm all for weather effects. Having them alter ballistic trajectories is a little out of the question, but just some environmental weather effects would be great. I really liked the Heavy Rain (I think that's what it was called) level of L4D2, with the periodic severe weather. Imagine marching your mech through blinding rain, only to come face to face with an Atlas. THAT would be awesome.

Well, for the Atlas anyway. You'd probably die, but it would be sweet.

It is possible for sure. I played a lot Crysis Wars some months ago, most of the (autodownloaded) user maps had been filled up with weather effects (I suppose to mask poor mapping-skills).
There had been Ionstorms (whole maps gets dark as a butthole, everywhere lightnings, hud is flashing), Firestorms, Tornados (Flying stuff, Hovers and Infantry had a real problem when they got sucked in), storms in general and so on. If real rain à la L4D2 is possible, dunno. But for sure can be a rain effect on the cockpit.

Edit: I was looking on youtube for examples of the effects, couldn't find none except the ion storm.
Start this vid and jump to 1.30+, 1.50+ or 2.20+ (better). This effect they let run over the whole map for ~1 min (including darkening the whole map) every 5 min. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kq0Y02mB-58&feature=related
And turn the volume down, this dude gickles like hell...
