Help the joystick support Dev - thanks everyone!
« on: February 27, 2010, 07:42:26 PM »
In the last days I have been so lucky to be in contact with the member of the Dev team that does the coding for the joystick support. This guy is doing great work to satisfy us joystick users, but it turned out his joystick is broken (on one axis at least) and therefor he can't really test everything. Sadly he can't afford a new state of the art joystick like the Saitek X52 or even the Logitech G940 :(
So I say let's donate for a new joystick for the joystick dev! Toth would be able to spend about 30-40 US$ at the moment, so the goal would be to collect 250US$, the rest will be paid by the dev himself :)

The money goes directly to the dev and he will buy the joystick that suits all his needs.

Collected: 250,-$  -  goal achieved!!!
Thank you everyone for your donation!

Oh, and if you're not a joystick user: Remember that hosting this website and forum isn't for free either, so hit the donate-button on the main page!

This is a really nice gesture  ;D. Well if you guys feel its worth it, then I'm not going to stop you. As Poldi wrote I can put in about $40 for it. Either way though I will be improving the joystick code going forward  :).

While I can appreciate the initiative here, I think a $300 joystick is a bit over the top.
I feel that coding for basic joysticks that the majority of joystick players use should be priority over high dollar fancy ones. You could purchase 5 joysticks with $300.00 and 5 devs could test with them.

That said I will not donate now but, If you make it to the $200.00 mark I will put in the final $50.00. (just because I want to see the joystick support be top notch.)

Or forget about this donation drive, and I will send Toth one of these:http://www.thrustmaster.com/product.aspx?ProductID=153&PlatformID=5
You could pickup the shipping charges.  :D

I have one here just collecting dust. It would be good enough for all basic functions.

@Toth if he reads this, if you ever want any specific functions tested please let us know. I'd be glad to help.

Alright - as I stated in a previous thread I was willing to donate some dough as soon as my G940 would be supported. Oh well, now I have to do that pre-emptively! 50 bucks otw...

Good call Poldi! We get his new HOTAS in no time!  ;D

@Suspect: sell that dust-catcher on ebay and add the amount to your donation :)

Good move QiLin!
With the actual EUR/USD rates it's a lot less for us anyways :)

So take the chance european MWLL joystick players!!!

You guys are great. This actually does help. There is nothing for a tester to run a certain joystick himself to do proper debugging :D

I might pitch in some cash too so we get Toth up to snuff :D

for $399 we can get him an X-65 and he will be honored at many campfires.  Or we could just wait and get him the A10 Warthog stick too.  Might as well code for the future!

@Seraph Go ahead! :)

I doubt Saitek will suddenly manufacture on the same quality standards as Logitech, so 399$ doesn't sound like a good deal to me... Also there are no pedals included, which would be another 100$ from Saitek.
And in the last instance it comes to the personal preferences of Toth when buying a new toy :)

Wouldn't it be cheaper to buy a Saitek in Germany and ship it to him? The actaul price in Germany for example is 136,99 €. In Dollar this would be 186,55 $. I dont think that the shipping costs are 200$ at all ?

Thrustmaster T.Flight Hotas x  ----> I found mine around $50

I found this joystick to be one of the best for Mechwarrior. The rocker lever on the throttle works great for torrso twist.
Also it has adjustable resistance and detachable throttle.

Check it out

My 2 cents on the choice of joystick:

Although the X-65F does increase your prestige and luck with the ladies it's at least 200 USD more than G940 as Poldi stated. TanteTrude: I've seen the X-65F advertised at 339 Euro - I wonder where you got those 136.99 Euro - be sure to look for the right stick. Usually electronic peripherie is cheaper in the US. Plus the 'non-moving' stick effect doesn't sound like a very good idea when trying to aim a crosshair.

As for the other mentioned sticks. The HOTAS-X is a nice budget HOTAS. Got one of em for my PS3 and my sons PC. It's nice an easy but nowhere as complete as the G940.

The choice of the G940 as a stick to try for the devs is quite logical. It offers an abundance of dials, sliders and buttons to program. An enthusiastic programmer could do anything with that setup. It gives the devs the possibility to maybe settle the 'mulitple-control-devices' dilemma in crysis - as solved by the crysis2 engine. It gives the devs the possibility to integrate Forcefeedback (something the X-65F does not have) which could raise the immersion within MWLL. In both cases users of other multi-device joysticks and/or FFB joystick would profit.

Simple joystick are already supported hardwarewise. Alrigtht, the setup has to be made easier but that will happen too when the devs check out the G940.

---

Alright - another 180USD and we are good to go!  8)

I totally agree with QiLin, but please keep in mind people that as I stated before it comes to the personal preference of Toth what stick he will buy. Of course we still can discuss the pros and cons of sticks, but this thread was intended for collecting money - so donate! :) :)

Oh and it's only 80 more to go if Suspect keeps his promise to add 50 if we reach 200.

Just donated $10 to the joystick dev efforts.

One thing I hope to see at some point is lower mech turning rate when zoomed in.  Just like how the torso twist rate is lowered when you're zoomed in so should the turning, since when using a joystick I tend to use a combination of torso twisting and mech chassis turning to keep on target.
