Strategies to take out Longtoms
« on: February 28, 2010, 05:13:23 AM »
Though I admit, Longtoms are a little OP damage-wise, they are actually quite vulnerable if you just two teammates coordinate an attack.

1) Put APCs in a secure location close to habitual enemy Longtom sites.  Then spawn some BAs and relentlessly go after it with C8.
2) BA riding on top of a Shadowcat in Passive Radar mode
3) BA tagging the Longtom from a secure location.
4) Puma TAGging while in Passive
5) Aeros (if you can clear out AA)
In a case where you have to take out AA, again use Light Mechs to take out AA so you can get your bombers in.

The worst thing is when the Longtom is inside the enemy base (like in Marshes)...
...not much you can do there...

Please share your strategies in this thread.

6) Use any light 'Mech with ECM(or a Scat) to get behind enemy lines and knock em out. I do this all the time against LRM boats(and now LT's). They're a great source of C-Bills at the beginning of a match.

I've found that Puma pairs do very well in this regard, as long as they can focus fire on one part of the armor (i.e. front armor, turret, etc.)  They have MASC and GECM, as well as low profiles, making passive runs almost undetectable if they hug the edge of the map.  While fairly expensive, every variant but the A can do this pretty well, and because of their speed, they can get back out again.

A starter Mech that can do this fairly well is the Uller A, as the CGauss does excellent damage.  It's basically a suicide run though, as the Ullers can't really stand up to anything else at the point where people can even afford long toms, and you can be sure the long tom driver is bawling out at the top of his lungs for help.
Played MWLL for Guillermo del Toro.

Light mech blitzkriegs do work very well.  I found using 3 or more increases the survivability for everyone :D

I did get to Fbomb one today in the sulla, I was very surprised it survived with ~20 armor :(  though i might have slightly missed.

I use the x3 Medium Pulse + x1 LBX20 Scat (with MASC and JJ) to knock them out. Only Mechs that can keep up with you are unable to kill you before you get to the Long Tom to knock it out.

Question:

What Servers are you guys playing on? I mean played several rounds of Version 0.2.0 allready and never experienced a situation where Long Toms dominated the battlefield. Even when there were 2 or 3 enemy LTs on the field it was still possible to snipe them with gauss/ppc or to get into laser/ac range.

After hacking the MWLL Devs database i found secret test Designs for Anti-Long Tom Mech.
Equiped with dual 208mm Anti-Mech Rifle's , more then enough to punch a hole or two into Long Tom Tank.

208mm? I'll just use the Warhammer if I feel the need to use two AC10s.

AC10 is more like 75 or 88.

I wouldn't say they dominate anymore as players update their personal tactics.  Marshes tends to be the most Tom friendly as there's less cover and no air support

AC10 is more like 75 or 88.

I remember reading that the AC20 is around 250+mm so I assumed the 10 would be a good deal smaller, but not that small.

Still, 208mm smells like a Hypervelocity AC10 to me.

i find a single puma with a F/B escort works quite well to suppress those pesky longtoms.

Some people just don't change ...

Instant whiners .. just add Long Tom ...

It is just another weapon that has to be considered in an overall strategy to win the day ... sit and shoot missiles from long range or have to move because there is a Tom inbound ... it isn't rocket science ...

yes basic strat is to do light armored raids or BA raids but since most of the times its not test of strength. there bit of a redundency of killing em in area battles like marshes where ya respawn and pump another and take just small amount of time to get back to the pounding unless ya have full proof way to pervent them firing all together.

usually in hour matches ya get about 2-3 spaming sitting at times in the mech bay

But ya all strats here make a viable if its in test of strength, but they could make it where

near or dead on hits create the damage we usually see than anything in a 20meter

diameter which we usually get as a result than having everything in that 20 meter

diameter taking full damage
