I think this makes it less useful for the original poster as they don't know which comment was smited, so they don't know what they said that was 'trolling'. In my case I'm fairly certain I was smited for telling someone that telling new players they were incompetent and shouldn't play the mod if they can't use their jumpjets to get into a mech easily was rude and unhelpful.

Hah.  You got one for that too?  Someone went on the warpath smiting away righteously.  I don't know how useful it is at all.  But it's an interesting sociological experience. (not experiment since the data are too cloudy)

IMO the smite option should be removed. Have no clue what it is good for as you cannot see (as mentioned before) who gave it and why.

I just use the 'applaud' function if something really pleases me or is a great idea IMO.

For the smite there is no use in my world. I really have a problem with a post I prefer to send a PM to that user for a discussion/to understand his point/to clearify myself.

But the 'thank you' button I really like.

Since the Smite/Karma is not even bound to the persons post this intended nature is not something we can actually track. We can't say "He was Smitten (;))" because of the post or of his personality. Hence the Thank you would probably be a better indicator of that.

Agreed on the rest. Still a fun feature :D

I will never know if it was that or saying that I would like a 3rd person view offline to get a better feel of a mechs size while piloting. It would be helpful for everyone to see which post had karma applied to the person but I do understand it can't be easily changed if it was not set up that way.

the karma feature really means absolutely nothing.  Theres no way to tell why you have received good or bad karma, or who's giving it to you (for all I know one person could just have a gripe with me and logs on ever half hour or so to neg me).  Really means nothing.  Just for a little forum fun ;)  and status.  Keep givin me the -, my epeen will be awesome!  "I HAZ BIGGEST NEGATIVE KARMA!!!!!"

Just out of curiosity, how many digits can the karma system track?  For example, will it stop at "999", or at "9999" etc.?

Well, part of the reason was because I was going to help out Redvan to see how much negative karma he could accumulate, mostly as a gag.  If it stops at -99, that's not nearly as hilarious as -9999

Doesn't really matter with the new system though as we can no longer smite.

I rather like the additive quality, as it's a much cleaner implementation in my opinion.

Yeah, and I never had the chance to smite someone for saying something stupid  :'(

I always wanted to go like "in the name of common sense, consider yourself smited" *whack*  :'(

Having the smite removed was a good move since that usually leads to smiting based on nothing but disagreement.  Not that the karma system really means much but it's always nice to have more features.

Yes, the smiting system was abused by some people who simply did a smite for differing opinions. But the "Karma" system is meaningless without it. Personally I used smite whenever someone was being a jackass (insults, trolling, excessive swearing, etc). Right now we have "Thank You" and "Karma". There isn't much of a difference anymore. May as well get rid of Karma and only use the "Thank you" system.
