Death From Above?
« on: March 03, 2010, 05:08:31 AM »
I remember reading somewhere that melee attacks will not be doable in this mod. Obviously, however, there is collision detection between 'Mechs, and there is collision detection between 'Mechs and trees(which cause significant damage).

If there is collision detection between 'Mechs and and damage from collision with trees, why then can there not be collision damage between 'Mechs? I'm not asking for melee attacks, I'm asking for traditional death from above and ramming damage to occur. An obviously outmatched Osiris should be able to turn itself into a brick to land on a Mauler's head, or run straight into it with MASC engaged to cause significant damage to both.

This would be a great alternative to jumping out of your mech when you have been disarmed. Obviously, a successful DFA attack would mess up the attacking 'Mech's legs. A successful ramming maneuver would screw up the torso of both mechs, depending on their relevant mass/velocities.

It's just an idea. I know the dev's have a lot on their plate already, and I really appreciate the hard work they've done so far. What do you guys think?

It seems that ramming damage does occur slightly.

Running fullspeed into a teammate's Harasser deals 1/8 to 1/5 of leg armor to me.

I think this could be extended to torso/arm damage when ramming a mech.

there is a slight collision damage, however I did preform a perfect DFA menuver today while attempting to escape direct fire from a warhammer. It didn't really work, but I did get a free ride on the warhammer.

beleive it or not, you can land quite successfully on some of the more flat topped mechs, like the MKII. This is especially lethal when you are piloting a lbx shadowcat

I for one have always been a huge fan of the death from above tactic. Melee with a mech always satisfies me.  Also i see no reason that one could impliment some code to convert  landing onto someone to a more damageing effect. Though it could be that the engine handles it in a  he with greater mass wins sorta thing(IE no matter whos ramming my BA always takes the damage). That might be why it is not there.

You know I ought to take more screen shots but I just get so caught up in the combat.  Over the weekend I believe I saw a scat ride around on the top of a thanatos.  The top of a thanatos is like a coffee table, and...well... Scats have good balance!

The other day, I accidenally landed a mkII on top of another mech. I think it was an awesome. I was like "wtf why am I moving forward", then I jumped off and saw the awesome below me.

Next time that happens, I'm staying on.

The team had to hack the cryengine code to get mechs working properly, and a side-effect is somewhat messed up collision detection. Whenever they get that sorted out, ramming damage and death from above will be there.

Ha - that would teach that vial-bred Clanners a lesson! Kick 'em in the nutz!  ;D

Seriously, physical attacks, ramming and DOA would be a great addition! An a premier since I haven't seen it in a realtime 'mech game yet!!

I don't want to offend, but that sounds like an unsound tactic. I mean you get no improvement of firepower. But you get that firepower to move like a Mad Cat II.

I would chose it the other way around :) A Mad Cat II ontop of a fast mech. Thats what i'd call a fast punch.

And the Mad Cat II would be the LRM shild, too.

I wish i had recorded this, however i had a reverse death from above moment.

The person who KILLED me was named nathan explosion. and you will laugh even harder knowing that when i explain.
i am flying around in an aerofighter, flying really low, about 100 to 130ft off the ground. i round a corner over a cat-*boom* it turns out, as i was rounding the corner, the catapult decided to poptart into the air and HEADBUT ME. OUT. OF. THE. AIR.  :o
now, keep in mind this guys name is nathan explosion.
 Death from below.  :'(
Any problem can be, in fact, solved with enough explosive ordinance. If the problem persists, you did not use enough ordinance. As such, use more tank.

sounds like he <death> clocked you good ;)
though its not DFA, its related, many times I would preceed a DFA with an alpha strike straight down in mw4.
look down, pull trigger.
I know there are limitations, but man its frustrating not having that in my arsenal when it degenerates into a brawl.
