Which Mechs to use and which to avoid
« on: March 09, 2010, 04:36:46 AM »
Blessed with such variety of mechs to pick from it is inevitable that there is alot of overlap between the mechs in terms of their strengths and weaknesses with some mechs outperforming other mechs despite similar pricing and similar combat roles. Which mechs are the best pick for a particular combat role/ price combination and which should be avoided I'm wondering?

Really depends on your play style.  For instance, I pretty much shun SCATS but other swear by them.

Awesome and Nova cat have somewhat similar weapon loadouts, but Nova tends to have better heat management.

that's a really unfair comparison Siilk ;)

It's like the girl next door: nice girl, looks pretty decent, well rounded.  could describer her as "pretty awesome"

and her hotter younger sister, she's got a better profile, makes guys drop dead she looks at them, can do all the things her sister does but is better at them, did I mention she's faster too?  A shame she's got such expensive taste.

As a good rule of thumb, anything with "cat" in the name, or anything that is a type of cat is generally a good call, and is in fact normally what I pilot.

Here's a list from light to assault:

Cougar
Puma
Shadowcat
Catapult (Cat-a-pult dohoho)
Novacat
Madcat
Madcat MKII
Played MWLL for Guillermo del Toro.

You got some kind of cat fetish going on there.
Far as the Novacat and Awesome goes - I think it might have more armor and is less pricey than the Novacat.  I enjoy playing the Osiris at the start of the game, the 360 torso is great for circling enemies. The AC2 Partisan is one of the few tanks that is still very useful especially at the start of the game.

BTW that was a very amusing analogy SquareSphere thumbs up.  ;D

just played Inferno and enjoyed some success with the Mauler A variant which has 2x Guass rifles and 2x 15LRM. I had a little over a 100K to spend. Was that a wise choice? Pain in the ass trekking bak to replenish ammo but if your only problem is that after you kill a few mechs you have to rearm... that doesn't seem too bad.

I typically avoid mechs manufactured in the Inner Sphere, they are inferior in design and when it comes to giant robots, accept no substitutes for solid clan technology. Sure they make capellan knockoff omnimechs but they pale to the power of the original

>.> I tend to like my Cheaper Inner Sphere omni-mechs, We got...Spirit! And...Supior Battle Armour, Back on topic, I tend to like to use mechs with a lot of guns strapped on too them. Like a Bushwhacker, or Raven due to it's Stealthyness, The mechs i avoid are ones with alot of rockets on them...Mad Cat, Vulture and such.

I prefer close combat stuff, Osiris B with its AC20, the Scats with ultra 20s, the Kit Fox B with its MASC, ultra 10 and ssrm6 - love the rapid reloading on those six-racks.

That Hollander with the flamers and machine guns is nice when BA are a problem (seriously one of the best parts of this mod, making AP weapons useful by having dangerous infantry!)

The Warhammer B must be one of the best value heavies too, I get a reasonable number of kills using those. The weapons reload quickly and seem to put out alot of punishment.

I cannot get along with lots of LRMs for some reason, I'm not very good at finding a sniping spot, nor can I get the hang of dumb firing LRMs close up so I dont go for Mad Dogs or TWolves much.

I find laser boats to be a bit weak, nothing to provide a sound knockout punch. The Mauler's base model is a bit of a paper tiger as well unless youre in range of the LRMs.
