Unit Logos? Ellements from Cannon Uniforms?
« on: September 28, 2007, 11:12:52 AM »
Battletech has a wide variety of unit logos, some ugly, some boring, and some cool. Are there any plans to include any of them on the mechs, tanks, or infantry in the game?  It might be a cool part of an optional skin with maching paint scheme and logo for a unit.

Camospecs has a good online listing of logos sorted by faction.

My second question is are there any plans to include ellements from the cannon uniforms for the infantrymen?

Actually camospecs is one of our major concept art sites that we use. It has some amazing painted versions of the mechs.

Now here's the problem and our solution.
Battletech inhenrently has 100's of different colorings for the battlemechs from truly ugly to very interesting and pratical. Because we are working in a fairly realistic type engine we are using far more classical military colorings on the vehicles for various reasons. One important one is that in the Cry2engine a certain amount of camoflage actually works! Thus if we had a Atlas that was colored like a clown it wouldn't be very easy to conceal in the forest (well and Atlas doesn't really conceal anywhere anyways but you get the point)

As far as unit logo's the design is setup so that once you pick either to play Inner Sphere or Clan you will then pick your badge (which is displayed on your arm as a patch) so it won't change your overall camoflage but it will change so key colorings like highlights on your character and your badge on the chest and shoulder.

The answer your last question about the cannon uniforms, the picutres that are available from various TRO's are simply horrid. Well i shouldn't say horrid but they are very retro 80's which is the complete direction than we are going. Thus you will not see very much in common with the CBT uniforms for infantry stay tuned for new concept art for the soldiers. One thing that's important to realize as well is that there are SO many different pictures with completely different styles of uniforms out there for battletech so if we were to try to stay true to one scheme we would be seriously violating a different once. To avoid this we have decided to use our artistic freedom and create our own concept and view of how a "mechwarrior" or soldier will look in 3050.

There are front and back picks of what say a Davion infantryman should look like, but I don't really think it's that important.  I definitely agree with some of the uniforms though.  The Jade Falcon helmet has to be the ugliest helmet I have ever seen.  It makes you look like a green pigeon.

Since I am on the subject, what about sneak suits?  I would love to run around under optical stealth chasing people with a vibro katana.  Maybe something for release 2?
Thinking about this makes me want to reenact the Black Dragon attack on Theodore Kurita's birthday military parade in Black Dragon with the infantry battle in the bleachers and the Mechs and tanks battling it out in the streets.

Sneak suits are a piece of equipment that is purchasable and will cause you to be 90% invisible....very difficult to see unless you are moving around alot.

I seem to recall some mech game (About the same time as MW3), but darned if I can remember the name of it (they had much smaller mechs than MW, but they were bigger than Heavy gear, proper mechs), where the mechs had 'active camo', which basically grabbed the textures from the terrain and slapped them on the non-window, non-insignia parts of the mech. Can't remember if it was done every second or continuously, but it looked very cool, and struck a good balance between concealment and visibility to the alert watcher. Would sneak suits would be like this, or just make most of the player transparent?

It will be very difficult to see someone with the sneak suit activated from a distance espeically if they aren't moving. When they start to run around though then you will see a bluish shimmer. They cannot fire or do anything offensive when in this mode though...well i shouldnt say that, when they do fire they will become visible.

Do they conceal you from vehicle targeting systems?

Ok. So you're invisible to both eyes and sensors. Cool.
