Ramp to enter mechs
« on: March 09, 2010, 05:23:54 PM »
Would t be possible to have some form of ramp or something extend from the catwalk at the wall out to the mech?

This is really just a minor issue, and I can do without it, but it can be somewhat annoying at times.
When you have purchased your mech and go down to the hangar to get into it its easy enough with small and medium mechs as the drop from the catwalk down to the mech is just high enough that you can get on top of your mech to enter it just by juming down.

But when you get to the heavy and assault mechs they are the same height or higher than the catwalk, making it more difficult to get across the gap to the mech.
How many times habve you not "instinctively tried jumping across that gap, only to have the BA jetpack propell you over the mech.
And then to have any attempts to compensate only make it worse.
So you stand on the ground, now you have to get up into the mech.

Whether I stand on the ground or on the catwalk I have lost count of the number of times I have tried to get into my mech, only to fail and in the process expending my BA jetpack.
Sure its only a few secodns to wait to have it recharge, but sometimes I'm so eager to get into the fight, especially when on those rare occations get to pilot my favourite mech the Atlas, that those few second feel like a small eternity.

Can you honestly say that you havent at least once experienced the same thing?
As I said, its not a big issue, but sometimes its not the big things that annoying you but rather those small things that you really just should ingnore.

It's a pretty minor problem to be honest, even if you jumpjet over the mech accidentally you can enter if you mash the enter vehicle key quick enough, even if you bugger that up it only cost you about 10 seconds max in my experience.

Running off the back rampart at the hole in the railing without jumping lands your perfectly on any mech's access point.

do this, ramps like you describe are a bad idea for many reasons that i won't list

- BA killed from collision with ramp.
- 'Mech gets damage from colliding with ramp.
- 'Mech gets stuck with ramp.
- Complete remodelling of the interior 'Mech Hangar?

i would like that area where there is the opening in the fence on the catwalk tio jut out half a yard or so. it would be a big help getting into the mechs.

How about we just put a big sign next to the catwalk:

Well it is sort of a litmus test.  If you are having that much trouble guiding a BA to enter a mech then the reflex quotient this game requires for success is likely beyond your skill.

I've found that if you run off the gap using shift and tap the enter key you make it into every mech, if not land on the back itself.

Mocking someone for having trouble getting into a mech due to lack of practice is pretty insulting, during the first release the lag made it extremely difficult to get into a mech when I had no experience with the jump jet model for BA's, and don't get me started on Extremity.

Oh god, the horrors in the hangars in extremity.

Players just careening around desperately trying to get into things, not yet fully understanding how to control a BA in a low-gravity environment.  Good times.

I've found that if you run off the gap using shift and tap the enter key you make it into every mech, if not land on the back itself.

solid advice, I do this myself, and never had it not work, with the exception of bugs or super heavy lag.  In fact, I do it so automatically that it causes problems (see: Extremity).  Sprinting off that rail is not fun in low-grav.

It wasn't an insult.  It was a statement of fact.  Consider the task of entering a mech a tutorial for the rest of the game.  If you can't do that reliably then keep practicing.  Just because it isn't convenient doesn't mean it has to be changed for the sake of convenience.  Jumping and guiding your BA is probably the most basic of coordination movements and if it's that prohibitive to you as a player then I don't know what to say other than keep it at it chief because it only gets harder from there.  Yes, all games should strive to have a balance between accessibility and challenge but unless you are on extremity the BA JJs perform reliably and predictably; and a few seconds jumping around to get the hang of it should be right smack on the low end of the aptitude bell curve  compared to the rest of the game.

If the problem is entering vehicles wouldn't the clear solution be to have people spawn inside the vehicles instead of spawning as BA?  Anyway it sounds from the OP and the respondents that this falls pretty far down on the list of priorities.

I'll tell ya what I don't get:

Players who don't want to be able to enter a mech by just standing next to a leg because that wouldn't be realistic are ok with the fact that you have to perform jumpjet acrobatics to enter them. That doesn't strike me as real either. Either have a ramp or some other sensible way to enter the mech, or just say fuk it and let players enter by just standing next to a leg.

My suggestion, have a place on the catwalk above the mech where you can "enter" the mech from. Once the key to enter is pushed, a short animation shows the player hop in. While in the field, it makes more sense to allow the BA to enter only by JJ'ing on top of it of course.

I agree that it is a minor annoyance and personally i would like stand by the mech and enter it without having to jump. Its not a realism but more of a convenience thing. However there are a problems code wise....

Code? You are smart. You make code go.
