Nights not so dark.
« on: March 12, 2010, 06:22:11 AM »
Some time ago, when night falls on Clearcut or Extremity, I had to turn my nightvision mode on or be left with very limited visibility. But lately I have no problems observing even the distant parts of the the battlefield at night. Is it me, or nights became much brighter in 0.2.0? If it is so, maybe they should became darker again.

Do you have a video card profile/game profile/monitor with multiple presets? When night falls, I press the environment button thing on my monitor, taking it from standard to game mode, which ups the gamma a bit, making night a lot less dark, and making it easier to spot incoming enemies at a distance, even if they don't have glowing weapon colours (blue for laser/pulse, yellow for autocannons - the gauss rifle doesn't have a glowing colour, it is just flat grey).

You might have pressed the monitor button/set an upped gamma profile for the game, and forgotten about it. Even if not, you could try fiddling with these options to make night feel darker for you (though it won't be any darker for anyone else upping their gamma/monitor button things.)

Yes, definitely.
There's pretty much no point in using Light Amplification mode anymore other than to spot TAGgers.

Also, as a side-effect, PPCs are not as effective.  PPCs used to be used to make people lose their Light Amplification in the dark.  But now since night time is so bright...

@Nitro_R: My point, exactly. I never changed my gamma settings for MWLL, monitor or ingame alike, so I pretty sure it's 0.2.0 related.

@Xarg: I do use darker gamma settings for some games, Thief or Deus Ex for example, to get more atmospheric look, but such solution isn't suitable for multiplayer games, as it only changes what I see, but not what other players see. Visibility reduction due to darker environment at night has powerful influence on battle tactics, so now, in 0.2.0, we have that influence of day/night cycle on gameplay gone, as night is only slightly darker than day.

Yeah, love the Thief series (and The Dark Mod for Doom3 - basically a Thief remake), and they'd be terrible with high gamma. Making night genuinely darker would help kill such tactics (gamma/monitor), and make night vision more useful, I'd back that.

Nights are indeed brighter. I had wondered if maybe that was some new variable for nighttime combat, but I have not seen a dark enough night that required using night vision yet.

Frankly, I like it this way. I hate how night vision is represented. Those fake scan lines are irritating to look at.

Didn't MW4 have a gamma limit to put everyone on the same light scale in their multiplayer games?

Are you sure?  I thought I remembered the anti-cheat program on the Zone monitoring gamma settings.

it has a gamma adjustment in your video options, but there is no limitation making everyone run the same amount of gamma.

Agree...since 0.2.0 nights are brighter, making NV less useful and my thoughts are the same, that nerfs PPCs.

Please change that back devs.

I loved the pitch black nights. It really added to the immersion actually having to use Light Amplification or the Searchlight to see things at that time.

I really really hope they bring it back.

Now what the devs could do is take a screen-shot of a single black pixel. at the 0,0 coordinate on the screen. If it comes out to less than 90% black, boot the cheater for using Ghetto Night Vision. :-P

I'd really like to see a map that was 100% night time. Moonlight fighting all the way. Although I suppose one could set up an existing map and set the time of day to midnight for the duration?
