Varying Difficulty on Servers?
« on: March 17, 2010, 09:10:45 AM »
This is mostly for the players who can pick and play on servers around the world at decent ping.

I was wondering whether or not different servers are "harder" to play on when compared to other servers.  As I mostly just play on TLL Texas & TLL NJ, I haven't experienced gameplay on Euro or Aussie servers, so I was wondering what your opinions are.  By harder, I mean difficulty due to accessible player base, common regional playstyles, etc., and not things like ping or smaller sized matches.

Also, what would you consider the "hardest" server?

As I usually play on EU servers, due to better ping, but also have some time on US ones too (TLL TX & NJ mostly) I could assure you, that average player experience and overall play style are pretty much the same for EU and US. Cannot say anything about Auzz though, never played there, but I assume situation isn't differs much there.

Too easy, Snowball?
You're just too good.

Well, a lot of the people who join the TX and NJ server are rather new and we should spend the time to explain everything from how to share C-bills, how scoring works, to maximizing AMS effectiveness, etc.

Gotta promote the game as much as we can to get a good player base going.

...then there are the guys who suicide every round...

Thanks for that, but I see myself as more of a mediocre player who plays smart.

I'm actually genuinely just curious as to how people feel about other servers.  My own experience is extremely limited due to the fact that I live in Hawaii; as such, the only servers I can reliably connect to are in the west/central US.  It seems that there's a ton of awesome players all over the world, and I'd just like to see if there was any serious differences between regions.  I'm kinda bummed that I won't really get the chance to play those guys, but I'd love to hear their opinions.

this is more or less depending on opinion and personal experience that are variyng from person to person so i hope no one gets offended by it. this is purely a description given on personal experience that doesnt have to do with anyone. please dont troll and just use pms if you want to discuss my personal experience. that being said.

"harder" for me is where i notice that i dont have as much fun playing for various reasons not regarding lag,...
have a team that camps near hangar all the time leaving flanking operations to lone wolfs,...

from worst to best
1.mwll cracked
the couple of rounds i played there i noticed "less" teamplay, ppl that get kicked for no reason, at some point the admin forbid the use of lrms after which he kicked madcat, mauler users etc. some didnt know what to pick to not get kicked then which made it "harder" to play on that server at which point i left never to return.
2.assets incorporated servers
this is actually a very mixed experience.
played 100+ rounds there. sadly not a lot of populated servers in europe.
nearly all players joining there are friendly but when a.i. members join you have to watch out. most of them are very friendly and are good teamplayers but some have opinions how the game should be played, let these personal feelings get in the way of having fun and dont want to see it any other than their way. example. someone camps in a gauss demolisher and starts to swear about lrm campers as soon as the first salvo of a madcat prime that walks around a corner hits. same when you eject, leg someone etc. either you get insulted, warned to be kicked or they disconnect when the server is nearly empty.
another example. just yesterday was actually the first time i saw a a.i. staff that said something about a rule that says that you should stay away from the hangar +1000m. all the other times none of the admins cared if there was a LongTom shelling the hangar or BAs got in raping spawns. it would be nice if the guy who wants that rule would be there more often or all of the admins would agree on the same rules.
also this is actually the only server i ever saw people get insulted for having good scores. and that by admins.
well as said. not a consistent type of game there. you have to watch out for which admin is at the server if any and play accordingly to not piss someone off without even knowing it. so i find it rather hard to play there and choose others every time i can since it is one of the servers you always have less fun as soon as a specific admin joins.
3./4./5. #1 public eu/ger awg-club,    mwll server 1 by loa-clan.de,    MBO Germany FFA
somehow i always had a good experience there. always found some good teamplayers narcing/tagging, sharing money and found a lot of people that want to get close to the enemy. as well as in the enemies team. it simply was fun to play on these as well as challenging.
6.(TLL)Matchbox #2 EU-UK
rounds with pretty much the most fun and the most balanced teams i had so far as i remember. sadly its not populated that often.
good teamplay but still less camping and most of the people on the server are relaxed and play the game for the fun of it. these were my experiences there. recommended.

i couldnt say that much about all the other servers since these are the only ones i really played enough rounds on to say something. but it did somehow feel differently for me personally when i joined us servers. as stated before it may be because a lot more of "new" players are there in us joining these servers but i dont know. but i still had somewhat of an "easier" game going because i felt like there where a lot more "Nomads" in the enemies team as im used to ^^ but as said didnt really play that much on us servers so i can just say it for a very limited number of rounds.

and btw.. i envy you for living in hawaii ^^ its goddamn cold in bavaria atm
Add a better camper weapon to stop camping.... i still dont get it.

I tried some euro servers once. Had a ping of 200-ish. I don't recall doing too bad, even though distant mechs and aero rubber-banded a lot.

The cracked server, while prone to butthurt admins and random kicks, is where I play the most and probably where I do my best. The lack of teamwork on both sides work well in my favor and I am regularly in the top three if I'm there from start to finish.

I haven't played on the TLL servers much due to a combination of longer map loading times and never sticking around for the whole 100 minutes of a match. The few times I've been on, I reach the top 3 when LTs are not used and do shitty when LTs are used (mostly on swamp).

Hm... I play a lot on A.I. servers, but I never encountered such things. You must be "lucky" to catch A.I. people in a really bad mood or, maybe, they have something personal with you.

they're all basically the same to me...  I just go where the people are.  Generally, the more people, the harder the match.

My personal experience has been that it depends more on the time of day than the server.  Later weekday night (I'm CST fyi) and weekends are the best well rounded matches as the players tend to be a better mix of pilot skills. Ie you have more people that can fly, AA, BA and Tom.  The rest of the time it's pretty skewed toward players only tanking or being mech jockeys.  If I jump into an vtol or ASF they tend to not know how to fight back.  Same thing if it's a long range LRM battle as they'll just to just out LRM me (not the way to go since i'll grab a demo prime and go brawl under passive).

you know what i've noticed affects the level of difficulty on the servers. Time of Day. early in the morning it's real easy to run riot on the servers, but come late afternoon/evening the more experienced player base logs on and things get much more challenging.  this is true for pretty much all the more populated servers

I see the same players on different servers and it pretty much comes down to who is playing and whether they are working together.

this and...

this.

My only exception to this rule is the Boss Gamers Cracked server(s?). I could pretty easily get SaKhan or Galaxy Commander on Cracked at any time of the day. It only had a handful of skilled pilots, most of which have moved to other servers. The only ones that remain, to the best of my knowledge, are those that play with cracked versions of Crysis.

I thought I was good at MWLL when I played on Cracked. When I started playing on the TLL servers I was getting my ass handed to me repeatedly. I've since become a better pilot, Though I still bitch about Long Toms(you better not get in one though or I will do suicide runs in my Shiva to kill you repeatedly until you decide to play something else...i back my bitching up with action...at least until Long Toms are better balanced).

I have to admit, most of my success on the TLL servers doesn't come from skill, but from teamwork. I have a regular group of friends that I connect with on steam, and we try to form lances. If you see me on the field, 90% of the time I'm working with at least one other player, who I am in vent or team speak with.

Teamwork > anyone's individual skill, clearly.

I've been playing only on TLL servers lately, of course.  If I go commando, or don't try to use any teamwork, sure I do alright, and keep at least an even kill rate, generally.  But if some other TLL members are on Teamspeak, and we start doing ANYTHING together, it's a very short time before I'm wishing you could have more than one SaKhan/Khan.  (BTW you can also only have 3 Galaxy Commanders)

I've played on euro and us servers and it's all the same to me. Sometimes you get a bunch of good players, sometimes you don't. It's luck.

Of course, expect to find the best quality players on the TLL servers, but the other servers aren't far behind. Well, except the Cracked server which is far behind.
