Favorite Varient and Why?
« on: April 04, 2010, 02:03:46 AM »
Hey guys, I did a search for this and did not find it.  If there is already a thread about it, someone please link.

My favorite varient so far has to be the Cougar B.  Its combination of dual CERLBL and CERPPC is just spectacular.  I love that it can be a brawler early game, and then switch to a very strong harasser late game.  JJ late on make it easy to make that Mauler think twice about coming closer.  Heat is a bit of an issue, but only if you do not use your weapons on separate firing groups.

Anyway, please keep this civil, no bashing, and no OMG BECAUSE IT PWNS NEWBZ.  K thanks

1. Owens B:
MASC, lots of armor for a light, BAP+C3 and 2 SSRM6
What could you possibly want more?
The perfect scout and even better for fast hit'n'run tactics.

close 2. Vulture Prime
2 CLRM20s with a reload each pummel everything from far away, and if they try to get to close for LRMs 2 CLPL and 2 CMPL are more than enough to deal with everything below Assault class. The perfect fire support mech, and should not be missing in any good star/lance imho.
Never arm once what you could arm twice.

In Lyran Commonwealth, Atlas scouts you.

I must concur with the Vulture Prime as my close second as well.  I really like the fact that people underestimate the power of the lasers for mid-range battles.  I have taken out Atlases because they figure they still have yellowish armor, what harm could I do once they close the distance.  Haha, the Fools.

Owens B is a fantastic Light Mech and Brawler, and piloted well can beat nearly every Light Starter 1v1, but my favorite Light Variant has to be the Osiris A.

2 ERLBL's for stripping off dem arms/weapons, 1 ERMBL for extra firepower.  It can snipe cockpits, rear torso armor, BA's, and low-flying aircraft while running around with 360 degree torso rotation.  Not really a good brawler, but an excellent early support Mech that can stay viable til midgame.  The only thing I dislike about it is that it's ERLBL's don't actually hit out to 800m, which baffles me; I think the in-game range is like 700m.

Favorite variant overall in 2.0 would have to be the Scat Prime.  It's just.......delicious  ;)

In 1.0, it was the Madcat B, but it's not as viable anymore being nearly twice as expensive as it was.
Played MWLL for Guillermo del Toro.

For tank I say Huit A due to it's ability to annihilate Aeros/VTOLs and BA. It's weaponry can fairly easily fend off light mechs and give medium and some heavy mechs  reason to pause and reconsider.

For mechs I'd have to go with the Madcat MKII B due to my preference for conventional ballistic weapons.

 Here's my favourites for 0.2.0:

  • I second Osiris A. Sometimes I could make enough money to go straight into Atlas with it.
  • Scat C: JJs, fantastic long range firepower for it's weight and 2 MGs to pick BAs. But no extra ammo is a killer.
  • Mad dog A. 2xCGauss + 360 degree torso twist + ECM is a deadly combo. If there's enough space for sniping, he could be unstoppable, until assaults show up.
  • Ncat. Just NCat.
  • Timberwolf, Especially Prime and B
  • Atlas B ::)

LBX MadCat - There's no assault mech which can kill this one in 1v1 battle. He won't even be able to aim at me.

Favorite without a doubt is the Timberwolf B variant, Very nice direct, accurate damage at ranges up to 850m, with optimum engagement distance at 600m. As much as people say ERMED's arent upto much, personally I disagree, 3 of them, with the refire rate they have, add a decent amount of damage onto a target at a good range when combined with the rest of the B's armament. With accurate fire this mech can take down anything quickly, and its very good for fire support into brawls and in general support of your allies, because of its reliance on direct fire weapons.

Close second comes the shadowcat, any variant, I love them all. The mech is fast, has an amasing turn rate, has good quality jump jets, and has some awesome loadouts. Main gripe is the B variant is far too expensive considering how subpar LBX's are currently.

Favorite light is probably the cougar C variant, with 2 ERLarges, 2 LRM10s and a Narc beacon. combined with C3 and JJ's, this mech is good at finding the enemy, passing the info onto friendlys, and setting them up as good lrm targets. extra ton for narc ammo tho pls devs =)

And my favorite starting mech has to be the Uller A, what more do I need to say apart from gauss and ecm?

Vulture 4xSSRM6 variant (forgot the name) in low populated servers; this mech is pretty much impossible to do damage to once it gets within 300m of you, since the SSRMs shake your visions so much that you can't aim.

In higher populated servers, probably the 6xERMBL Puma. It can killed an Atlas with 3-4 alpha strikes to the back, take off the arm of most mechs in 2 alpha strikes, it has MASC, it's a small target, and it's effective at killing almost everything.

Pretty much any Shadow Cat for me, but especially the Prime and A variants, both great all round firepower and the A chews up all sorts of mechs for breakfast!

Close second are the Vultures: Prime and A.  Both great, the twin gauss is amazing.

Oh yeah, Osiris B is typically a starter unit for me too, if I'm not running a Gauss Uller or a Hawkmoth.

1) Osiris B - has great mobility, speed, and JJ.  The AC20 keeps it a threat for most of the game.
2) Vulture Prime - Like others have said, great support mech that can actually do decent damage if units get a bit too close.

the LBX madcat

flamers make balistic mechs power down (strangely enough, flamers power down the energy friendly balistic mech, while the energy mechs just shrugg it off)

LBX ... 'cause i just love LBX, always have

twin SSRMs deal a shitload of damage, maybe not /shot, but they shoot so damn fast

That's because ballistic-oriented mechs usually short on heatsinks.
