AC2 is worthless in a BA fight

Lies - but very hard to use properly =P

Best BA counter is MG's or catching them mid jump with lasers. Alternative is a PPC in the face when their on the ground, which is an easier shot usually.

There's alot of good tips here about BA's, so I compile them and make a brief guide.

How to deal with BA's
Ideal Weapons (in order of effectiveness from top to bottom):
  • Medium Lasers or larger, preferably more than one (small works okay, but there has to be more than one).
  • MG's and smaller caliber AC's, again more than one.
  • Splash weapons (PPC's, Large Caliber AC's, etc), if there's suitable terrain nearby.
  • Flamers, if they're right on top of you.

The Process:
This depends heavily on how they engage and what's around you, but the basic premise is to get some space between you and the BA.  Try to back away from it, towards friendlies and unoccupied space that still offers cover against other enemies.  Once the BA cannot move around you, but rather has to approach you, it becomes much easier to deal with.  DO NOT TRY TO TURN AROUND IN CIRCLES AND ENGAGE, OR RUN AWAY THEN TURN BACK.  Either of these can lead to the BA catching up to you and closing the gap.  Backpedaling is the best option, and if it looks like the BA will get behind you, just turn 180 and backpedal in the opposite direction.  Keep in mind that most mechs can outrun a BA, even while moving backwards, which will force them into a smaller and smaller area in front of you.  If they jump high enough into the air that you can raise up enough to target them try to guess if they'll still be in front of you, or if they'll land behind you, and adjust accordingly.  DON'T STOP BACKPEDALING.  Note that you need some space or a good knowledge of terrain to do this effectively.

Weapon Uses:
  • Lasers are good for engaging BA at nearly any range (as long as you're a good shot; this might take some practice), and are the most efficient for dealing with BA that like to peek out of cover and take a shot (besides flamers, but that's only at close range).  Things to look for: little black cloud streaks, as this indicates a BA who jumped.  Zoom in along the trajectory of the streak and snipe him off with lasers.
  • MG's and the Smaller AC's are good for picking off BA hiding in terrain features (like the bushy/grassy/swampy ground on marshes) and are okay at range, but not as good as lasers.
  • Splash weapons are good if you can accurately guess the landing zone of the BA or if the BA is out of JJ juice; just slap a PPC down near them and it'll probably kill them.  These are tough to use against BA's in cover or at a long distance.
  • Flamers are the go-to weapon for BA's that are swarming you; in fact, if you fire a flamer, most BA's won't engage you at close range (cause they'll die in a flash), allowing you to use your other weapons to pick them off at a distance.

I dislike the idea of an automatic eject function, because every single fight would eventually come to the winning side trying to fight off 8+ BA's.  On top of that, I'll fight to the death unless I have all my weapons destroyed, or my leg gets taken off.  Sometimes it's better to die and grab a new mech, than to lose your mech, have NO money, and run all the way back to base as a BA.

Another tip I would give people trying to get away or face BA is making sure you're always MOVING and don't back yourself into a corner, because of the BA you're fighting is a good player, you'll c8 you to death.  It's much easier to get them to stick when you're backed in a corner or are stationary.  I jump for joy whenever I find a mech that's decided to park itself and try and deal with me, as my AC2 rips into their armour and the c8 blasts away, they're practically helpless.  Assaults are good to attack, so make sure you're always aware of the battlefield to prevent BA sneaking up on you, always have a buddy!! +1 for the laser tips as well guys :)

Actually the Partisan with 4RACs is pretty weak if you don't try to run up on it.

Exhibit A: in order for it to shoot you, it must have line of sight meaning you can see it.  If you can see it then it is lockable by LRMS, and can probably be hit by other long range weapons.

If something doesn't work, try a different approach or weapon.

Perhaps the formation of a server dedicated to first-time or relatively new players could be made?

I know the troubles that come with trying to make a new dedicated server, but perhaps just changing a relatively unused server to a new player server and titling it "MWLL Official New Player Training"?  Try to have at least one relatively experienced player online at all time that can kick/boot griefers while providing an environment for rookies that doesn't beat them over the head.  Players can interact with others at or close to their relative skill level while having experienced/veteran players on-hand to clear up any confusion and provide tips.

The veterans (admins) should be at least one per team, and should refrain from actively participating in the fight as much as possible in order to keep the atmosphere "casual" and relaxed.  This might make it somewhat boring for them, but I'm sure there's people willing to help out new players despite this.  Anyone is welcome, but preference should be given to newer players; after "graduating", they can then be directed to more challenging servers, like the TLL servers.

Thoughts?

When I get the game, I was gonna do training for my own unit, but I guess I can open it up to all Newbies interested... though of course I'll need some myself beforehand...  ::)

Well, perhaps a newbie, looser or what ever should give feedback here...like me :D

I love MWLL, but i am a absolutly casual player. As my job doesn't give me the oportunity to play often, i just log in for some relaxed and funny combat rounds. I does not seek the high competition and do not want to be "the best of the best".
I had my own "epic moments" (Killing an Atlas with the osiris for example) and get my ass kicked about a hundred times...no problem.
Just one thing is really frustrating me: Those little BA! Damn, i even does not hit an assault mech in full speed from time to time, but those little, jumping beasts demolish my mechs faster than every mech could do. And i am completly helpless here. And that are the extrem frustrating moments were i log off and play some other games.
Imagine the following scene: You never played a music instrument for your whole live. But you think it could be fun. So you buy a keyboard and start playing. Not very good, but it makes fun. From one second to another, all your keys changes their size to about 1mm˛. Now thats how i feel against those ba. ;)

Sorry, i dont want to make that another "i hate ba" thread, but to answer the question: I love the game but i stop playing if i get kicked my ass by something that is even smaller than my legs feet. And because of this and my short spare time, i don't get really better.

What i think would beeing nice: Servers for different "skill-ranks". So the elite has their places with compatition for them and we noobs can play without beeing slapped, kicked and stomped to the ground every 20 seconds :D

yep!
