VTOL's aka "Flying Coffins"
« on: April 09, 2010, 12:38:20 AM »
I'm sure there have been other posts about the status of vtols but I have my own question I'd like addressed..

Why change the way the vtols fly from vanilla crysis?  Those vtols flew like a dream and could actually hover and maneuver, they could easily hide behind cover and ascend and descend quickly for attacks. MWLL's vtols are slow flying death traps that take zero effort to kill with AA or gauss, require tons of effort actually move around in and with, and without a hover function make sniping with the Ltgauss variant almost impossible.

Its my fondest wish that something be upgraded for the vtols in the next content patch.

b/c apparently cysis has a very shitty flight model which needed to be replaced in order to get ASF in; VTOLs just behave differently b/c of this difference in flight models. but I agree, there needs to be an auto hover function.

true, but i guess it was a little to easy regarding how complex mechpiloting is, there would be a huge advance for vtols if they where as easy to handle as in vanila crysis...
nevertheless, you're right current control sucks and needs to be improoved!

I second the notion that Crysis had a shitty hover function.  It's a hell of a lot more fun piloting in MWLL, where you actually maneuver in a complex fashion.

An auto hover function isn't needed so much as a reverse thrust and maybe a down thrust.  Increasing the gravity to negate the need for downthrust wouldn't be too good, as you'd need a rather complex control plan to manage the more constant upward thrust.  I'd still love to see that happen.  A little bit more speed in general wouldn't hurt.

That, and the turning rate tied to FPS bug needs to be fixed.  That really hurts maneuvering VTOLs in tense situations.
Thanks for the view.

Once I got the joysticks setup correctly, the VTOLs became very easy to manuever.  They just need considerably more speed from high angle manuevers, and a faster overall control rate more in line with a real helicopter.  If I roll it over 90 degrees to the right and all that thrust that's able to keep me off the ground is suddenly blowing left... I should move right in a hurry.

I'd also like to see flexible weapon mounts, but I don't see that really being feasible unless they wanted to add a gunner position.

yea, some way to "keep height" would be great :)

Still the VTOL is Flying Coffin because Hawkmoth is light, recon unit, not the gunship. Gunships will come... some day.
Oh, and the AC5 is overpowered making Hawkmoth life even more difficult - one can be killed before even have a chance of hiding. You couldn't kill the Crysis VTOL in 5 seconds - but you can kill Hawkmoth...

Both thumbs up to the OP. The Vtols in Crysis MP were intuitive to use and damn nimble and precise to fly. Taking cover behind builings, real low to the ground flight all was possible with some practise.

Actually you could kill the Crysis VTOL in under 5 seconds, Konka did it to me a few times in the AAA tank in one game I remember well.  And Crysis VTOL is not a good example, as it is the most OP and noobish vehicle in that game IMHO.

Anyone remember Longbow Gold?  If you crested a hill to find a 2S6 on the other side at under 2.5K you were dead 2 seconds after the turret turned to face you.  If you were over 30m off the ground in your apache you were soon to be dead, so you NoE'd to target area at under 30m, and popped up to attack with your missiles or rockets etc.  IMHO this is how VTOLs should operate.

There's a reason that Light Recon 'mechs exist...they last longer in the field than VTOLs.  Period.  VTOLs in CBT can be taken down by a small laser or couple of mgun rounds to the rotor, regardless of their tonnage & armour, they're inherently suicidal, disposable, and often one-shot troops...much like they now are in MWLL.

I think a LOT of people coming from Crysis expect the VTOL to be the uber unit of death, like they were in MWLL 0.1, I think the balance is now a little in the AC5s favour, but not that much....at least we no longer see the VTOL pilots going 10-1 K/D ratios by merely hovering 1000m and circling above the targets without fear of AAA (who could barely scratch the VTOL).  Nowadays if I see a VTOL pilot going 10-1 on score I know that pilot has some serious skills.

I agree that an auto-hover would be of benefit to the VTOLs.

I think VTOLs would be a lot better if yaw was on the mouse and roll was on the keyboard. And fix the roll, it acts like the VTOL maneuvers from a point above the VTOL itself.

Nowadays if I see a VTOL pilot going 10-1 on score I know that pilot has some serious skills.

Anyone who can get a 10-1 K/D in a VTOL is either on Inferno or the other team is full of idiots, since a single Partisan or Huit can completely wipe out anything in the skies by simply looking at it.

Personally the way they handle right now just doesn't really feel like the handling of a nimble hit and run scout vehicle.

I'd rather see the vtols fly like the crysis ones.

the main problem with the crysis ones being overpowered was because they had armor comparable to the tanks and their missiles were uber powerful, not to mention they took more missiles to kill than you could carry at any given time, and could climb faster than the missiles could fly.  Nix all that and you'd still have a balanced nimble vehicle.
