YARRR, ITS DRIVIN' ME NUTS!
« on: April 20, 2010, 11:57:13 PM »
So here I am in my little Shadowcat, the greatest Assault mech ever made. I'm not quite on my front lines, there's nothing happening around me, and nobody on my radar. Everything is quiet, and I see nothing.

Suddenly a couple tiny red triangles point towards my right. I hear a dull 'clud' as my Autocannon just completely falls off and hits the ground. As near I can tell, some asshole crew chief back in the hangar forgot to tighten a couple bolts and it just fell right the fapp off. I turn and stare at it in completely disbelief, lying on the ground looking at me like a beat puppy. On the ground is exactly where that gun should NOT be.

Then my Shadowcat just tips over as the leg joins the Autocannon in taking a vacation.

Who'd have thought I just got hit by TWO Gauss shells?

Anyway thinly veiled bitching aside, what gives? Is this a bug? Because it happens like three times a round :( Absolutely ZERO feedback whatsoever that I'm getting hit by weapons. They don't make any noise when they hit me (s_maxchannels 128). The completely worthless damage feedback system doesn't help, nor does the fact that most weapons don't provide any tactile feedback to the guy being hit...

But really, the sound thing... what the hell?

I don't think it's a bug but rather a design decision/unimplemented feature.  mechs do get those flashing red triangle around the reticle when hit, but lets be honest, i don't think anyone notices them.

when getting with by a laser it makes sense that there would be very little physical feedback in the cockpit, but hitting hit with a huge slug it should do something to rock you around.

Well lasers *are* doing some pretty catastrophic things to your mech's armor. You'd see a huge explosion of fire and vaporized steel. Getting hit with Gauss should push me around a bit, but you'd also here a tremendous sonic boom.

Also remember you're inside a giant metal can. You're gonna hear echoes through the frame of everything happening. Like a 250 pound slug crunching and decimating solid metal :)

At any rate, almost every square inch of a mech is covered with damage sensors, it's pretty much totally unreasonable that I could ever get hit by anything and not have my attention immediately drawn to it, and also not have a pretty good idea where said damage was coming from.

Still a laser is "light"  it has no mass there for it's not rocking  your mech.  Unless it hits something inside that explodes you might not ever know unless you're looking at it head on.

wait does gauss break the sound barrier?  if so you'd get the impact BEFORE you heard the sonic boom.  DEVS GET ON THAT :P.

Just an out there suggestion, if the little mech model that shows damage on the right would flash on the part being damage it would draw the pilot's attention better.  But then it might get annoying when you're getting bombed, lrmed, or tommed :D

something  you might not consider though.  The laser is just light, yes.  And light does not really have much of an impact unless where talking solar sails and even that is slow...

but it just turned half a ton if not more of metal, ceramics, and plastic into an explosion of vapor and molten slag.  that explosion would definitely cause some impact feeling, though probably not as pronounced as a solid object detonating against you.

Like most modern ballistics, an AC round should break the sound barrier, so a guass round would without a doubt. I don't know what the muzzle velocity of one is, but it's supposed to be sick.

EDIT: couldn't find gauss rifle velocities but here's a quote from wiki (for what it's worth) regarding the similar rail gun. "3,500 m/s (11,500 ft/s, approximately Mach 10 at sea level) or more (for comparison, the M16 rifle has a muzzle speed of 930 m/s, or 3,050 ft/s)"

..so, over 3 1/2 times faster than an M16 bullet. At the above mentioned sea level, the speed of sound would be about 761 feet/ second, so an M16 bullet travels at over 4x the speed of sound, and the rail gun at over 15x.

Lazerbeams would probably burn the air around it, which might make a sound. I'm not a scientist, but it's a consideration?

If nothing else, being hit by a laser should introduce at least a little smoke (burning metal/myomers etc) and possibly some rocking (you're balanced around having a full set of stuff.... some of it just evaporated, you are now unbalanced temporarily).

You'd still hear the sonic boom in almost the same moment it hit.

The sonic boom is propagated from the mass itself. Sonic booms are 'delayed' if you're a distance away, where the cone-shaped shockwave takes longer to catch up to you.

/end whine thread

edit: BTW, does monkeybink remind anyone else of that guy who used to constantly whine about the devs? I forget his name, think he got banned though..

I dunno i find Monkeybonk threads pretty entertaining and he does present his points with well thought out arguments.

Only problem is he bases his whines on the beta build which, as the devs have mentioned, is rather outdated at this point.
